Born Days premieres dystopian and existential new track “Is This Reality”

“Is This Reality” is taken from Born Days‘ upcoming EP, Where We Live, due out October 4. [Pre-order]

Chicago-based singer-songwriter and producer Melissa Harris, better known as Born Days, is readying the release of her sophomore EP Where We Live, which will follow up on her 2017’s self-produced debut Be True. Over the last two years, the multi-talented artist has also been touring with Negative Gemini, Kedr Livanskiy and George Clanton amongst others and laid the foundations of her own record label, Rain Heart Records.

Recorded in her DIY studio, her new offering “Is This Reality” resonates well beyond her one-bedroom apartment. Drenched in reverb and driven by a hypnotic breakbeat loop, the dystopian and cosmic track mixes nostalgia with anticipation. Dark and dreamy, it was actually motivated by existential questions, as she explained:

‘Is This Reality’ is a song about looking around the world and feeling completely stuck in the reality that has come to be. Coincidentally my way of escaping is by making music and this song is about that feeling of questioning what this existence even is and how much control do we really have over it.

About the inspirations of the track, she also added:

Right now I have been really inspired by taking elements from the past and trying to re-create them and it seemed fitting with this song because while I am questioning reality I am also drawing inspiration from it. I have been really inspired by 90s house, techno, and industrial lately and have been listening to a lot of artists like 808 State, Apex Twin, and Orbital.
