We’re only 6 months into 2020 and it actually feels that the world as we know it is about to collapse. Who knows what’s coming next? For better or worse, a lot of things are simultaneously happening around us and music has been an essential way to find hope and kill time. In 2020, artists need us more than ever and, in case you did not figure it out while being stuck at home, we also need them. Can you really imagine a lockdown without music? We can’t. As we’re now at the mid-way point of this exceptionally horrible year, it’s time to share with you, like every year, the 30 tracks that have helped us to hold on so far. The video for 070 Shake’s latest single, “Guilty Conscience”, begins with a message. “Although I’m not a boy, I wanted to display a boy being broken,” reads the yellow text over a black background, “How he manages his sadness when he is not allowed to cry”. The note is signed Dani Moon, 070 Shake’s alias, and it does more than just give context on what the song sets out to explore; it sets the mood for a track that’s a deep exploration in and of itself, both in subject matter and sound.

“Guilty Conscience” sees the artist simultaneously sticking to her guns and pushing the envelope. The ticking hi-hats poking holes in the beat lay a familiar foundation, while a bed of Vaporwave-tinged synths imbue the song with a faint neon glow for her richly mixed vocals to bathe in. For contrast, the subject matter of the video itself isn’t quite so delicate, with Moon and a group of baseball-bat-armed young men getting into various forms of trouble before ultimately engaging in a bloody brawl, all while the lyrics spin a tale of vulnerability and betrayal.

This tune looks to usher in a new era of 070 Shake, with her debut full-length, MODUS VIVENDI, set to release later this week. The HighClouds Seal of Approval might not hold quite as much weight as that of Kanye’s own label, but we stamp it wholeheartedly, nonetheless.

Like every December, we close a year of music with our traditional lists. After the Best Albums and Best EPs and Mixtapes, we’re happy to unveil the songs that made 2019 according to our team. Are these the best releases of the year ? Maybe yes, maybe no. But for sure, they represent what we have loved over the 12 months.

2019 is also the end of a decade and, even if the blog did not exist 10 years ago, we will try to share our favourite tracks of this era during the first quarter of 2020.

Finally, I’d like to mention that HighClouds would not be the same without its team of dedicated writers. People don’t always realize it but running a blog and contributing, even only from time to time, requires a lot of energy on top of your full-time job. So thank you to each of you for this.

Anyone who loves music knows that it has the ability to slow down time, a phenomenon that takes place quite literally in 070 Shake’s newest video for her recent single, “Nice To Have”. Murky, nocturnal visuals meet a crooning, auto-tuned slow jam in what makes for what might be her most emotional release to date.

Dimly lit streets, heavy traffic, and, ultimately, the fatal flower truck accident in which 070 Shake meets her own demise mark this cinematic video, as it peers into the diverse lives and loves of anonymous Los Angelites. Lyrically, “Nice To Have” spins a story around the invaluable nature of love, and the striking ease with which it can vanish into thin air, as it shifts between moments of both mournfulness and fulfilment.

A G.O.O.D. Music signee with friends in high places (see, Kanye West), the artist is on a trajectory that bodes well not only for her own career, but for the female and LGBT rap communities as a whole. Her North American tour kicks off in September, and her next project may very well be right around the corner. Until then, it’s “Nice to Have” something to tide us over.
