Let’s not beat about the bush: 2020 was the worst year of my life and I think it might be the case for a lot of people around. As a music fan, not being able to attend any concerts, seeing some of my favourite venues and festivals endangered and reading that up and coming talents are struggling more than ever has been a big bummer. I’m not even mentioning all the emails starting with “hope you are well during these strange times”. Well, guess what? We aren’t!

Even if we have spent most of our time locked at home, streaming more music than ever, not sure the smallest DIY artists will see the difference when they’ll receive their royalty revenues. All of that to say that artists need you more than ever. As we always repeat it, streaming is good but it’s not enough. Buy your vinyls, cassettes and merch and so on on Bandcamp special days (so they get 100% of the amount) or via your local record store (yes, they’re also having a hard time), attend virtual shows or, even better, send direct tips to the artists.

Some good news, though: 2020 has been pretty amazing music-wise. While it’s not always easy to support everything or to keep up with all the weekly releases, our staff tried their best to introduce you to some promising up and coming talents and bring the best new music to your ears throughout the last 12 months. Refusing to chose between gabber and operatic pop, Mathilde Fernandez and DJ Paul Seul launched the duo ascendant vierge last year. If you’re allergic to bass, please close this page right away, cause the Brussels-via-Paris pair are not here to joke. After a batch of seismic singles, including our 2019 favourite “Influenceur,” they’re back with the very Mylène Farmer-esque “Discoteca”, a banger that will shake the clubs up even before their reopening. Brussels-via-Paris gabber pop duo ascendant vierge, which comprises goth-pop singer-songwriter Mathilde Fernandez and Casual Gabberz producer Paul Seul, has just returned with a new banger. Like their previous offerings, “Où sont nos rêves ?” comes with its share of mystery. It’s a visceral, Mylène Farmer-esque track to be experienced with your body and to be thought with your brain. Even if it’s not obvious in the first part of the track, “Où sont nos rêves ?” is actually a cover of David Guetta‘s “Stay”. Stay tuned cause their debut EP is on the way.

The song was actually released some months ago but they have just unleashed the accompanying visuals, which were directed by Kevin Elamrani-Lince. Of course, this thrilling new track is normally tailored for the clubs but with the current Covid-19 crisis, it’s better to party alone at home, like the two artists in the video.

Like every December, we close a year of music with our traditional lists. After the Best Albums and Best EPs and Mixtapes, we’re happy to unveil the songs that made 2019 according to our team. Are these the best releases of the year ? Maybe yes, maybe no. But for sure, they represent what we have loved over the 12 months.

2019 is also the end of a decade and, even if the blog did not exist 10 years ago, we will try to share our favourite tracks of this era during the first quarter of 2020.

Ascendant Vierge is a new transnational and trans-musical duo formed by Brussels-based lyrical goth-pop singer-songwriter-performer Mathilde Fernandez and Parisian DJ and producer Paul Seul, also known to be the co-founder of the collective Casual Gabberz. Before starting this new project, the two artists already connected in 2018, when Seul remixed Fernandez‘s single “Oubliette”.

In astrology, the virgin ascendancy is known for its prudence and its very orderly side. This sounds pretty ironic as “Influenceur”, their debut single, is anything but quiet and tidy. On the contrary, this is a flamboyant song driven by a gabber beat that pounds hard and fast and Fernandez‘ otherworldly, operatic singing. Sounding a bit like French gay icon Mylène Farmer who would be high on ecstasy, the track sounds both tortured and euphoric, making a bitter observation about social media influencers. There are more tracks on the way from this very unique up and coming duo. Meanwhile, put your fluorescent clothes on and sweat your soul away on “Influenceur”.
