This Week in music with Deer Du Bois, we spend with new lovers of the sound!

Shimmering pop for an indian summer, smooth and sweet with new songs by neo-soulist OHKE and their laid back single “Stay”. Or with Swiss revelation Gaspard Sommer, who sounds like an eternal post-summer’s dream on “Like Memories”.

Beck – Wow

There is a new video by Beck and it can be best described by its title – “Wow”. It was directed by the artist and Grady Hall but also features the work of other visual artists. It also stars the children of the American artist!

The least thing we can say about this video is that it is a collaborative work as it has involved a lot of people including Sam Cannon, Randy Cano, Andy Gregg, David McLeod John McLaughlin, Jess Rona and Steve Smith.

Beck says that the video fully corresponds with the song. Bright colors, a mixture of textures, new visuals. He also adds that this clip was influenced by the effect of looking at the pictures on Instagram and other social media. Thus, this video could be considered to be a new form of social media.

Beck‘s last LP was released in 2014 and was entitled “Morning Phase”. A new album, yet untitled, should be released on October 21 via Capitol Records. It will feature “Wow” and last year’s single “Dreams.”

M83 announce new LP “Junk”, share new single “Do It, Try It”

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]W[/su_dropcap]e already knew that the French synth-pop band M83 were ready to give a follow-up to their 2011’s album “Hurry Up, We’Re Dreaming”. Now things get more concrete with the announcement of this upcoming seventh LP “Junk”. The release is planned for April 8 on Naïve/Mute. And in order to make you wait, Annie Mac just premiered the amazing first single titled “Do It, Try It”.

Back in December, Gonzalez noted on Stereogum that he was inspired by 1970s and 1980s television shows such as Punky Brewster and Who’s the Boss?, stating, “I feel like TV shows are starting to sound and look the same. There’s no more passion anymore. So this album is a tribute to those old-fashioned shows.” You can hear this retro and psyche sound in the piano riff that goes all over the song but also in the powerful chorus the band has the secret of.

In a press release, he also declared: “Anything we create today is going to end up being space junk at one point anyway, and I find it really fascinating and scary at the same time – beautiful too in a way. I have this image of pieces of humanity floating in space, lost forever. It also means that nowadays everything goes so fast and everybody is kind of throwing away art in a certain manner. People will listen to an album for instance and just pick a track they like to put on a playlist. They’re not going to take the time to listen to an album anymore because they have to jump on the next thing.”

The Chemical Brothers – Wide Open (feat. Beck)

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]T[/su_dropcap]he Chemical Brothers released “Born In The Echoes” during last summer. It features collaborations from artists such as Q-Tip, St. Vincent or Beck. Finally, here is (once again) the Dom & Nic-directed video for the track with this latter artist: “Wide Open”. It follows the theme of human-robots that was already used in the video of “Go”.

The track in itself is certainly not the one to remember from the UK duo and this idea of a single dancer-robot is also not original. Nevertheless, the video is superbly executed. The woman, who is dancing in an empty warehouse, is talented and the FX are captivating.

In a press release, you can read that “Dom&nic’s vision was to merge the mechanical and organic, having been inspired by procedural cellular structures; their VFX Team at The Mill created a full CG model of the dancer, Sonoya Mizuno, comprising of 107 individual anatomic rigs, as well as bespoke tools to allow the seamless transformation which happens during the dance”.
