After “Sunday Morning,” Juno Francis and Alejandro Molinari link up once again for what they call an “Italo Disco inferno.” Featuring synths recorded in Breakbot‘s studio, their glittery, nocturnal new offering, “Symmetry,” is a perfect addition to the Johnny Jewel‘s label. The Marcus Spitta-directed visuals were shot in the lustful, kinky KitKat club in Berlin.

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]W[/su_dropcap]ho the fuck said that the funk was fucking dead? Yes, the release of Boulevards‘ debut EP on Captured Tracks turns me into a poet. Try to listen to the four tracks of Jamil Rashad‘s self-titled new project while staying impassive: if you manage not to move your feet or to shake your hips, tell me what is your secret!

The musical story of Boulevards started from an early age as he is the son of a jazz radio DJ. Jamil innately grew up in a house where jazz, blues, R&B and funk was constantly played. However, the artist from Raleigh, NC broadened his horizon during his adolescence by branching out with punk and metal.

The first track of the EP, “Got To Go”, was produced by Rollergirl! and was already released at the beginning of 2015. It is a disco track cadenced by claps, a funky bassline and abrasive synths. It reminds us a pop version of Chromeo or Breakbot. The video was directed by Lauren Gesswein & Alexander Christenson.

[su_youtube_advanced url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhVdhcn2N8o”]

“Sanity” follows a bit the same pattern, even if the track is way much funkier. The break will obviously make you think of Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson‘s masterpiece “Wanna Be Starting Something”.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/214809013″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

But Boulevards is not only capitalizing on the past. He is also drawing the future of funk music, like Dâm-Funk, and you can hear this modern touch in the bass acidity and the echoes of “Forgot To Mention”, a track that was produced by Isaac Galvez.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/199074988″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Finally, the closing track of the EP is “Honesty”: a mid-tempo groovy track that is as heady as the previous ones.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/225243530″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

If you wanna buy the EP, it’s over there. An album is on preparation for 2016 and a tour is also planned to support it!
