The second taster, “Under The Covers”, leans into something softer and more grounded. Built on a sparse, almost hypnotic arrangement, the dreamy track captures the quiet rhythm of a relationship that settles into everyday life. It’s less about big moments and more about the small and familiar ones that slowly start to mean everything. You can hear that feeling throughout, especially in lines like “Under the covers we’re alone sometimes and you’re talking to me about your day”, where nothing much happens, yet everything is there. Known for her atmospheric and emotionally ambiguous songwriting, Carla Dal Forno builds her songs from sparse synth textures, pulsing drum machines, stripped back guitar lines and deep bass undertows, with her cool, distant voice floating above it all. Confession follows her 2022 album Come Around, and comes after the 2025 release of “Veselka City Lights” on A Colourful Storm’s compilation Going Back to Sleep… Alongside the announcement, she has also shared the first single, “Going Out”, with a video directed by Hanna Chetwin.

Some weeks ago, Carla dal Forno announced the release of her third full-length project Come Around and shared the title track. Today, the Australian artist unveiled another taster off the record, the aerial and intimate “Side by Side.

“‘Side By Side’ is about the anticipation of hooking up with someone and the feelings of inevitability, transparency and impatience,” dal Forno stated. “It’s all in the lyric, ‘Make your move / I recognise the method you use.’ I’ve been sitting on this track for a few years. The production was really slow at first, leaning towards ‘ballad’ territory but it really seemed to find its groove when I increased the tempo and leaned into the bassline hook.”

It has already been three years since Carla Dal Forno released the haunting Look Up Sharp. Since, the Australian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter left London and Berlin and returned to live on her native island, in Castlemaine in Central Victoria, where she crafted her freshly announced third album, Come Around. Along with this news, Dal Forno also revealed the title track and lead single, which proves that her music did not lose its distinctive dreaminess and laidbackness during her hiatus.

“‘Come Around’ was inspired by a guy I used to play in a band with,” she stated about this track with some dub inclinations. “I really admired the way he played guitar. He had this laid back strum that was effortless and cool. I was mucking around at home one day trying to imitate the way he played and I wrote ‘Come Around’. I wrote the song during a carefree springtime and I loved working on it while recording this album. There’s a lightness and openness to it, which I feel quite liberated by. It reminds me of a life I once had with very few responsibilities.”

Firstly, albums are not a thing of the past! Lof of people have claimed that this format was not relevant anymore in the streaming era, but the artists below have proven the contrary this year. Albums remain the best way to fully express an artistic direction and a vision.

Then again, it’s never easy to definitively rank albums so we guess that this list is only a photography of our tastes at this very moment. In one year, it could be totally different…

London-based Australian artist Carla Dal Forno continues to tease the release of her sophomore album Look Up Sharp, which is described as “a transformative move towards crystal clear vocals and sharpened production”. More grounded but still very dreamy and mysterious, this new direction is definitely palpable in the opening track of the record, “No trace”, where bass and synths are at the forefront. London-based experimental pop artist Carla Dal Forno recently created her own label and released a double single “So Much Better/Fever Walk“. She has now announced her new album which follows up on her 2016’s debut record You Know What It’s Like. Titled Look Up Sharp, the album is described as an evolution, “pushing her dub-damaged DIY dispatches to the limits of flawless dream-pop.” Her new track, “Took A Long Time”, seems to go into that direction. About the track, she explained:

Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carla Dal Forno has just announced the creation of her own label Kallista. Coming with this exciting news, she has also shared a brand new song, “So Much Better”, that is part of a two-track 7-inch record to be released next month. With this new track, the artist that we discovered with her lo-fi and contemplative soundscapes takes some distance from the misty atmospheres of her debut projects and renews her songwriting. “So Much Better” also comes with a video courtesy of Ludovic Sauvage.
