Since Chromatics announced their disbandment last summer, all of its members are now pursuing their career with different new projects. This is the case of their emblematic frontwoman Ruth Radelet, who released “Twilight,” an Elliott Smith cover, back in December. She’s now back with her first original solo track, “Crimes,” which was crafted in collaboration with producer Filip Nikolic of Poolside. Speaking about the song, Radelet seems to imply that it is a statement about the end of Chromatics.

“‘Crimes’ is about the pursuit of success at the expense of one’s integrity, and the exploitation of others in order to get ahead,” she explained. “It’s about the price we pay for our choices, and whether or not it’s worth it. The question, ‘Is it easy to start over?’ can be interpreted in two ways—it’s meant to ask how it feels to continually reinvent yourself until you lose sight of who you are. It also asks how hard it would be to walk away from it all.”

It looks like Chromatics are in a productive mode since they released their album Closer To Grey last year. Besides an extensive worldwide tour, they have already released a new song earlier this year, “Toy,” and they’re already back with another one, “Famous Monsters,” tailored for the dancefloor at dawn. The track is released via Italians Do It Better‘s freaky weekly instalment Fresh Blood and comes, of course, with a Johnny Jewel-directed video.

Like every December, we close a year of music with our traditional lists. After the Best Albums and Best EPs and Mixtapes, we’re happy to unveil the songs that made 2019 according to our team. Are these the best releases of the year ? Maybe yes, maybe no. But for sure, they represent what we have loved over the 12 months.

Firstly, albums are not a thing of the past! Lof of people have claimed that this format was not relevant anymore in the streaming era, but the artists below have proven the contrary this year. Albums remain the best way to fully express an artistic direction and a vision.

Then again, it’s never easy to definitively rank albums so we guess that this list is only a photography of our tastes at this very moment. In one year, it could be totally different…

Finally, if you like any of these releases, and we’re sure you will, don’t forget to support the artists. Streaming is a good start, but it’s unfortunately not enough.

Chromatics made their comeback in 2019, but not with the long-awaited (still a euphemism) album Dear Tommy. Instead, they unveiled a beautiful surprise record, Closer to Grey, which opens with a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s iconic track “The Sound Of Silence.” They have now shared a 4-track EP which is centred around that song and embraces a folksy vibe. The Sound of Silence EP features two versions of the track as well as their cover of Jackson C. Frank’s “I Want To Be Alone” and a new acoustic track titled “Burning Bridges”. Listen below.

God knows what is going on with Chromatics. We have been waiting for their much-hyped new album Dear Tommy for the better part of the 2010s and there’s still no word on it. Johnny Jewel and co. keep putting a few one-offs every year, but that’s about it. We should know better than to complain about new Chromatics music, though. Pretty much every song they’ve released since 2012’s Kill for Love has been an absolute gem, and their recent cover of Jackson C. Frank’s “I Want to be Alone” is no exception. In fact, the only shocking thing here is how un-Chromatics their cover is, particularly when considering their idiosyncratic versions of classics by Neil Young or Cyndi Lauper.

“I Want to be Alone” remains truthful to the original, Ruth Radelet’s voice sitting atop acoustic guitar arpeggios and minimal arrangements. Her vocals sound less dreamy and more folksy than usual, which seems to particularly suit the song. It’s probably one of the less original songs in their catalogue, but just like whenever Radelet is singing, there is a certain magical charm at work. Chromatics have also released a Johnny Jewel-directed video for the song which, in very Chromatics fashion, features close-ups of Ruth Radelet’s staring intensely at the camera.

An outsider figure not alike Johnny Jewel himself, Frank has long been an indie-favourite for covers – just off the top of my head, Fleet Foxes, Car Seat Headrest, and Laura Marling have covered his music. It’s not easy to do justice to the source material here, but Chromatics do it apparently effortlessly. Will this song be on their new album? Probably not. Does it even matter? Probably not! An exceptional addition to their canon, “I Want To Be Alone” continues the band’s hot streak with covers.

Canadian enigmatic band Heaven are one of the most recent acts signed on the Italians Do It Better label. Following up on their 2017’s debut EP Lonesome Town, they recently returned with a brand new single, “Truth Or Dare”, produced once again by their label mastermind, Johnny Jewel. They have now unveiled an accompanying video which was directed by Jewel and edited by Chromatics. Watch below.

Chromatics, one of the most elusive bands out there, have released a new song. In “Time Rider”, the Portland outfit metaphorically turns a motorcycle into an interdimensional vehicle that can go back and forth in the past and the future. Oscillating between elegant synthwave and cold disco, the Johnny Jewel-produced track also comes with a self-directed video.

If you have followed the Dear Tommy saga, you probably know that “Time Rider” was featured in the original tracklist back in 2014. Let’s hope this new release will come with an official announcement about their long-awaited fifth studio album. Meanwhile, get ready to ride into the storm below.
