With a more-than-polished cover art for their upcoming EP – a one of a kind DIY inspired CD presented by Zippy the mascot – Planet 1999’s Valentines Day treat to the PC Music fandom is the release of their third single “Replay” off of their anticipated debut EP titled Devotion.

From the airy synths to the lust-driven daydreaming narrative, “Replay” shares the same ideas as “Party” (already featured amongst our favourite tracks of 2020) and “Spell” while maintaining its own sense of style. Underlying tones of intimacy dwell over Planet 1999 songs like a beating heart. What differs is the pace of the heartbeat. The new single sounds as though there’s a moment of clarity where there’s no denying of intimate feelings. Sonically there’s less unfulfillment or desire in the first two singles, and more so a call for having solidified feelings addressed.

“Babe, it’s you, I reckon you would not say, What you think about / Oh, what can I do, because, I’m never getting over you, Never getting over,” they sing. It’s the truth, whether bitter or fulfilled. “Replay” just wants it all over again.

Brussels kids, catch Planet 1999 on stage with A.G. Cook and Hannah Diamond for a PC Music night at Les Nuits Botanique.

PC Music‘s first live band dropped a magical new track titled “Party,” and it sounds exactly how a live band from the PC Music collective should be. With misty synthetic layers of dreamy instrumentals that illuminate like chimes in the wind, the single operates as a score to a cult classic film. Hypnotizing repetition of the lyrics “how are you doing” emphasizes on the narrative of the track which the band describes as “taking a break from a party to go outside and look at the stars.”

Following up to “Spell“, “Party” is accompanied by a textbook definition 80’s retro VHS music video. Infinite green screens and layers of footage where Planet 1999 band members are vibing out to the instant classic that is “Party.” An honorable mention goes out to Zippy, Planet 1999‘s 3D Mascot (designed by Leon and Stefan Sadler), who makes a well-deserved cameo with PC Music frontier A.G. Cook in the video as the band members jam out in their own little world of digital transcendence.

The London-based trio’s debut to the world is as sonically enchanting as the title of the track. The sensuo-synth excellency of “Spell” lifts the airy autotuned vocals on the track, mirroring the emotional likes of label member Hannah Diamond.

Clocking out in less than three minutes, “Spell” follows Planet 1999’s mission statement: short and sweet emotionally driven deliveries of what it means to feel something. With their motto “everything is about emotion,” the band leverage live instruments and technology to their advantage to convey nothing short of what is possible for you to feel. Is it sadness? Is it power? “Spell” will help you unravel those feelings through their lo-fi digital dream.

The release of their debut single was accompanied by a visualizer which is just as mysterious as the whispering lyrics and sudden appearance of the group on the PC Music label. Their self-produced debut EP Devotion is set to release this fall.
