NON WORLDWIDE:

The record label of founders Chino Amobi, Nkisi and Angel-Ho that stands for global sound, African artists and black diaspora is the common thread in this playlist. They are releasing a three-part compilation and explain the compilation genetic theme, saying “NON conducted a genome-wide association study in 42 NON citizens. Our result: 42 tracks, three albums.”

DJ Charme – Aurora X:

May I call Midlife, the Belgian Non Worldwide? No really. I suppose I’d be jumping to conclusions. But the label succeeds to collect the most interesting artists in the country, make them collaborate and release (by far) the best Belgian music of the moment. DJ Charme’s charme is the latest stunning release.

TERR – Have You Ever:

Rapid electronica beats, loads of new wave vibes, analog synth: the main ingredients of Brazilian producer TERR. She just released her debut EP ‘Have You Ever’, consisting of three very danceable tracks (+ dub version of “Have You Ever”) all accompanied by her metallic robotic voice. One to keep a serious eye on!

Tami T – Strong Hands:

“Strong Hands” is probably the ‘oldest’ song in all of my Highclouds playlists so far. But I’ve got a good reason to open my 16th Highclouds playlist with Tami T’s best song – not that I need any reason to add any song in my playlists anyway. Anyhow, when (heroine) Fever Ray played the Ancienne Belgique last Thursday, Tami T was the support act. If you’re a keen follower of Highclouds I’m pretty sure you already know her ánd you know she’s amazing (with her strap-on as percussion). “Strong Hands” definitely is a (gay) anthem the world needs.

Basile3 — Sadly, My Crypto Banks:

This is the discovery of this playlist. “Sadly, My Cropto Banks” is part of Basile3 – a 24 year old producer based in Paris – his latest EP “Recyclable Pop Exercice”. It’s a compilation of some songs he made during last year. “I guess – Recyclable Pop Exercice – is my utopic, honest and versatile take on current trends and tropes in instrumental pop music” – quoting Basile3.

Orlando – Friends or Lovers? (feat. Buscabulla):

Oh I love it when new artists succeed to completely blow you away with an excellent debut album – thinking about Kelly Lee Owens and Kedr Livanskij among many others last year. Orlando who combines pop, dancehall and contemporary club music in his self-titled debut certainly knows what he’s doing, working together with Mr. Mitch, Octo Octa and Buscabulla. The album is about “focusing on experiences of near-insanity, depression and healing”, inspired by life in New York, his sexuality and ghosts.

Danny L Harle – Blue Angel (Feat. Clairo):

Yes, a good old Danny L Harle song, that what I needed! “Blue Angel” is not a typically heavy bouncy slick dance song. It’s that Charli XCX-ish smooth pop with a very similar (mainstream-ish) voice but what makes this song is this euphoric chimes synth melody. Side note: Danny is working together with the Youtube star Clairo on her forthcoming EP.

Martyn Bootyspoon – The Grid:

In some way this Martyn Bootyspoon crossed my path just when I was making this playlist. I didn’t know him and still don’t know anything about him. I only know he’s part of Fractal Fantasy and his grimy debut EP “Silk Eternity” is probably my favourite of this year so far.

Branko + PEDRO – MPTS:

You may know Branko from his genius 2015 song “Take Off” featuring Princess Nokia, at least that’s how I got to know him. The Enchufada label boss explained earlier this year: “I wanted the first track that I release in 2018 to be a celebration of the Enchufada vision of global club music that we’ve been championing for over a decade. “MPTS” is kind of a Portuguese text message slang for what you would call your crew or your friends, and being surrounded by your crew doing what you love is exactly the vibe we felt in studio while creating this track.”

Golin – Momoko:

This is not a new new song, but the world just needs to know about this artist. Finally I saw Golin live and at one moment I got goosebumps (I know classic but it is how it is) and just realized how good it was. Golin is a American-Japanese singer based in Brussels, working closely together with Midlife (Kassett and Samuelspaniel). She’ll be one of the new (Belgian) voices of 2018!

Bad Gyal (prod. Dj Florentino) – Blink:

Bad Gyal’s “Jacaranda” was such a banger last year. This “Blink” is not as good, but she still playing at a very high level. It’s the first single from her second mixtape, due February 23. Quite sure it’s going to be a good one!

Let’s Eat Grandma – Hot Pink:

I’m only now – when I’m writing this last little piece – realising these three songs I’m highlighting have something in common. It’s the energy I presume? Anyway, this “Hot Pink” smashes them all, thanks to the production skills from SOPHIE. Who else could do this?

Femme En Fourrure – Creepers:

“Music made for DJs and catwalks; also: for nightly promenades and oceanside sexin’.” that’s how the Finnish Femme En Fourrure describe themselves. I couldn’t agree more. New album “Body Positive” is a step in a more poppy sound, but still with both feet in the experiment and deep electronica.

Dead Serpent – Eclosión:

Super unknown, that what I can say about this Chilean band. I don’t even remember how I ended up listening to the dark wavy shoegaze from what apparently is the music from a guy called Von Warloc. Mystery.

WULFFLUW XCIV & Nahshi – Latente:

Last year Wulffluw XCIV released an awesome aggressive sounding electronic EP ‘Matanza’. Fan of WWWINGS, Mechatok or KAMBLAM? Then you might take a listen to this “Latente”!

TR/ST – Bicep:

As sure you can be the best pop comes from Sweden, that how it’s a certainty the best weird electropop find its origin in Canada. TR/ST is one of my all time favorites and with “Bicep”, he’s going more coldwave than ever. The fast rhythmic baseline, ominous dark synths draped with the shrill-ish voice of Robert Alfons bring enough new and classic TR/ST elements to call it one of his best songs ever.

Kedr Livanskiy – Ariadna / Love & Cigarettes:

Since her marvellous debut EP “January Sun”, Yana Kedrani aka Kedr Livanskiy is one of my new favourite ambient though melodic electronic singers/producers. Not as catchy and straightforward as Kelly Lee Owens but compensating with lots of weirdness and dusty noises – recalling the early Grimes – she sounds very ‘now’, as even the dreampop shoegaze influences are there. “Ariadna” is the melancholic though euphoric sad song of the two, “Love & Cigarettes” the opening song at a dark hipster club.

mgz – Iphone True Love:

My discovery of this week: YOUNG VIBEZ. A Spanish collective/label mixing latin American uplifting vibes with the new hipster-gabber trend. Not a lot is known about the collective, but I wanna dance on their VIBEZZZZ.

Doro & Buga – Overdue:

Midlife is the thread through this playlist. The label run by Belgian progressive electronic producers Kassett, Samuelspaniel and doro might be the best the Belgian music scene offers at the moment. Its sound is challenging, measurable with international level (Lee Gamble, Lorenzo Senni, Rabit, Lexxi,…) and together with Hiele, Sky H1 and Ssalivva they’re putting Belgium on the avant-garde electronica world card.

Doldrums – PERV:

As one of my all time faves I’ve been looking forward to Airick Asher Woodhead’s 3rd record since he released “The Air Conditioned Nightmare” in 2015. His first and second LP were released by Arbutus Record and Sub Pop respectively, so you’d expect Esc to go for at least as big. Following other recent indie releases by Washed Out, Molly Nilsson & Still Corners (and probably a lot more), the Canadian choose for the smaller label. What does that mean for his sound? It’s still rough (ruw), industrial, catchy IDM-ish though more atmospheric without losing its edge and dancey aggressiveness.

Washed Out – Get Lost:

In similarity of shoegaze, that other laidback indie genre called chillwave has got three pioneers: Toro y Moi, Neon Indian and Washed Out. After the chillwave wave (2009-2011), the first showed the most creativity on “Anything In Return” (2013) and “For What” (2015), but disappointed big time on his new “Boo Boo”, released last week. Neon Indian really got me with his “Polish Girl” on “Era Extrana”, but wasn’t really able to captivate me until his surprisingly good, funky and catchy “Vega Intl. Night School“, released in 2015. Washed Out seems the one ‘stuck’ the most in the chillwave style, though on his new album “Mister Mellow Ernest Greene” he gives the genre a twist turning it more funky, almost sounding like Bonobo (I’ve Been Daydreaming My entire Life) or Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Tundra – My Love:

Driving through vibrant cities or beautiful landscapes is one of my favourite things in the world to do, especially when the accompanied soundtrack is kind of hypnotical. Try playing M83’s music while driving through a tunnel for example. Wouldn’t it be the best if a band/artist’s pseudonym was just “Tunnel” or “Savanna” or … Ok, no it’d be boring but with Tundra’s music I can see myself driving through a tundra landscape endlessly.

NKISI – Welcome To The Jungle:

Nkisi is one of the best kept secrets of Belgian’s music scene. Though she’s renowned worldwide in the experimental electronic scene as one of the co-founders of NON WORLDWIDE, together with Chino Amobi and Angel-Ho, in Belgium itself she’s practically unknown. Let’s change that Belgium! As she’s one of the few people who can really change and reinvent the Belgian music scene.

doro – Evasion:

Music wise – and non music wise, watching you ex-mayor Yvan Mayeur – there’s so much going on in Brussels. The hiphop scene on the one hand is better and bigger than ever with artists like Zwangere Guy and Stikstof. Acts like Kassett, Samuelspaniel and doro on the other hand are the new revelations in Brussels’ progressive electronic scene, internationally guided by Mechatok, Dinamarca, Y1640 and so many other interesting new artists.
