TWINKIDS, the Los Angeles-based queer pop duo consisting of Gene Fukui and Floridian Matt Young, have just shared their second track of 2019. Like their previous single “Eighteen”, “I Luv You” reflects on romance and, more specifically, on the conflicting and complicated feelings that follow a breakup. About their melancholic and nostalgic synth-pop track, they detailed:

[su_quote]’I Luv You’ is about the time I saw someone I used to love with someone else. Maybe I still loved him, I don’t know. After that break up, I had found myself not knowing exactly how to fill my time because so much of my time had been spent with my partner. To fill that void, I rushed into friendships with people who felt too cool and weren’t quite right for me. But at least I felt like I was moving on. And then I saw my ex with someone, and it all came crashing down. In that moment I yearned for him so desperately.[/su_quote]

TWINKIDS, the Los Angeles-based queer pop duo consisting of Tokyo-born Gene Fukui and Floridian Matt Young, have shared a brand new track. On “Eighteen”, which culminates in its dramatic chorus and draws from 80s synth-pop, the two songwriters and producers reflect on young love, as Gene explained:

[su_quote]’Eighteen’ is about young love. It’s about looking back at a romance that once felt like it was the most important thing in the world. When I was younger I had this naïve and detrimental optimism. But life kind of happened, where money and careers took precedent and the relationship fell apart. The song is about looking back at your past self and realizing how much you’ve changed and how much other people have changed. I guess that’s terrifying in a way, like nothing really stays the same. Even something you once felt like you were going to devote your entire life to feels really distant, but it still left a hole in your heart. [/su_quote]

“Eighteen” also marks the announcement of a new EP, Lizard House, which will be released on Mateo Sound (Saro, City Father…).

TWINKIDS is a Los Angeles-based queer pop duo comprising Gene Fukui and Matt Young. The two of them met while studying at Oberlin College and at the Conservatory of Music. In 2017, they compiled their songs about youth and queerness into their debut “Boys Love” EP and caught our attention at the same time. Recently, TWINDIDS unveiled an emotional new single, “I’m Sorry”, which was muscially inspired by one their idols Kazumasa Oda. About the meaning of the track, the duo stated:

[su_quote]I’m Sorry” is about an emotional blackout, leaning into those feelings that the world is against you, totally wrecking everything and hurting someone close to you because of your own hurt. You can’t think straight, your emotions are jumbled and you’re totally defenseless against that pendulum between “highest highs” and “murderous lows”… The whole song’s kind of an apology for what you did during that out-of-body experience, when you became someone you’re not.[/su_quote]

TWINKIDS‘ “I’m Sorry” just got a visual treatment which was directed by long-time collaborator Dakota Light-Smith and Ines Alpha. Watch it below.

TWINKIDS is a duo comprised of Tokyo-born artist Gene Fukui and Floridian Matt Young who met during their studies at Oberlin College and the Conservatory of Music. After the release of a few singles, including ‘Body Wonder‘, they finally revealed their 7-track debut EP.

The EP ‘Boys Love’, which is out now via Om Records, is mainly inspired by Japanese genre of gay romance manga. This famous art was primarily written by women for women in parallel of protests from a Japanese society that can be more conservative than we think. By using the term ‘Boys Love’, TWINKIDS wanted to give a tender, beautiful and complex meaning to those words that are sometimes used in a negative way. About the EP, they detailed:

[su_quote]All the songs on ‘Boys Love’ were written during a really unstable time in our lives, right after we moved to Los Angeles,[…] They’re all about the anxieties of being young, gay, in love, with no sense of self. I think you can hear that tension in the production too. Its all very high contrast in the way the songs suddenly open up just to tighten or close in later.[/su_quote]

Taken from ‘Boys Love’, here comes the new single ‘Shotgun’, which blends 80’s J-pop influences and modern electro-pop soundscapes.
