True to the HighClouds spirit, we’ve once again tried to shine a light on overlooked releases and new or under-the-radar artists alongside some more familiar names. And yes… for the second year the same artist is topping our Best Songs list. At this point, it’s safe to say we’re obsessed. We know these lists are completely subjective and that ranking music can feel a little weird at times but these are the records we’ve had on repeat over the past 12 months. More importantly, in a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, highlighting lesser-known and often overlooked artists remains the very essence of our blog. We hope you’ll take the time to dive into the artists and projects you might not know yet.

Like last year, the list is ordered alphabetically, because the “real” ranking changes every day depending on our mood. That said, if you’re looking for a top three, keep an eye on Oklou, Nourished By Time, and Smerz.

The dual release of their latest songs, “Pacemaker” and “Stay Friends,” showcases the unique sound and creativity of Georgie Hoare and Joe Bedell-Brill. Both electronic and acoustic elements shine through their music, which is crafted in total isolation.

The duo said that the upcoming mixtape is made up of multitude of genre hybrids and said it’s “upbeat, fun and trashy or atmospheric, experimental, sad. A mixtape is the best way to show people Georgie & Joe.”

They also shared an experimental A.I.-powered music video for “Pacemaker” which features memories the two have shared together in a constantly changing form.

“One of the exciting things about electronic music is being able to introduce accidents and randomness into the creative process,” they said in a press release. “AI allows us to do this with visuals as well. The eerie clashing of A.I. with real, intimate moments in our lives is a satisfying visual reflection of the way we make music.”

The new mixtape is due out May 23. They also will take the stage for their headline show at Corsica Studios in London on May 28.

Formerly known as 0171, Joe Bedell-Brill and Georgie Hoare are reintroducing themselves as Georgie & Joe. To launch this new creative chapter, that they describe as escapist and maximalist, the Hackney avant-pop duo just released their sweaty debut single, “Student”. Bullion also contributed on some production elements and mixed the track.

“We were playing around on a synth and came across that organ sound,” explains Joe, about the UK garage-inspired track. “As soon as we started playing a riff, Georgie was improvising the line ‘I got a song that’ll make you sweat’. It just felt right. We wanted that contrast between a spacey, eerie atmosphere and a beat that calls you to dance. We called it ‘Student’ because we were in Berlin and that day we’d learned the word ‘Studentin’. The song came quickly, a feeling of wanting to dance and to be in love.”

“Student” is released via foundation.fm, which provides transformative space for female, queer and non-binary people to reshape culture through music.
