John Errol has big plans for 2021. After having gone quiet after the release of his breakthrough single “Run Wild” in 2019, Errol has just put out “Sometimes”, a new track off his debut album Inferno. What brought John Errol to the spotlight was his ability to pool disparate influences within the same pop song: here is a guy as influenced by Elliott Smith or Berlin-era Bowie as he is by Britney Spears or Nine Inch Nails.

“Sometimes” sees him doubling down on his open-minded philosophy. Certain parts of the songs are instant call-backs to early 90s indie rock, from the heavily prominent bass to the whispered vocals and the attempt at marrying psychedelia with dance. It’s more of a tug of war between shoegaze and baggy than at attempt at finding a comfortable middle ground between the two: the introspective lyrics and demurred vocals battling against the heavy pounding of the rhythm section. Baggy, with its rhythmic loops and pulsating bass lines, appears here completely detached from its straight, laddish origins; instead, Errol sings about needing “a boy to love”, and there is no braggadocio to be found in his vocals at all.

Young artist John Errol delivers a poignant performance in his self-produced ballad “Dead Man Walking”.

We’ve all experienced those moments about feeling self-conscious on going on dating apps, specially after such a bad previous commitment. The brutality of some exchanges can be pretty rough and John Errol opens up about his own experiences, as he explained to us over email:

The song is about that moment where something so familiar abruptly changes—where you can’t seem to recognize someone you were pretty certain of. “Looking” in this case also nods to Grindr culture, and how easy temptation is in the community. I’m not sure what everyone means, to this day, when asking “What U looking for?” or “Looking?”. In my relationships with men, I’ve found there to be underlying deductive comparisons. There is also a level of objectification that I’ve never been okay with.
