In Joviale’s own words: “Mount Crystal’s lore is driven by the embodiment of desire, danger, and desperation. A mirrored dimension in a distant reality where nothing is left unsaid. These chapters crave to tear apart the illusion of pleasure by alchemising the unrelenting pain I’ve experienced in my efforts to love, deny, and embrace the sweetest melodies with the sweetest friends.”

The 14-track project features previously released singles “Snow,” “HARK!,” “Let Me Down,” and “Moonshine.”

Following up on “Deep Blue,” the title track, “Yes,” is an uplifting slice of pop that radiates cautious optimism. “I wanted to capture the feeling of finding joy again after a long period of sadness, entering into the unknown against a backdrop of deep unrest and uncertainty,” Groves explains. Built on a foundation of drum machines, FM synths, and a beautifully affected piano line, the song swells with a gritty yet hopeful energy, making it a cathartic listen. Now, with “Moonshine,” Joviale steps into brighter territory. Co-produced by John Carroll Kirby, Jkarri, and Kwaku Konadu, and elevated by Ezra Collective‘s James Mollison’s saxophone magic, the track leans into soul, jazz, groove, and funk with playful flair. It was born from a series of loose jam sessions, with Joviale channeling a Prince-inspired energy—think Sheila E. meets art school daydream. One of the track’s standout lines, “I’m easy breezy / Sweeter than a kiwi,” was delivered off-the-cuff while eating the fruit, embodying the charm and spontaneity that make this new era feel so alive.

North London polymath Joviale has just announced the release of their sophomore EP, which was, like their debut EP Crisis, crafted in collaboration with Bullion. Entitled Hurricane Belle, in reference to the exhibition of contemporary artist Peter Shenai, the 4-track project introduces a strong, frontal and disarming new sound, as heard on aptly-named first single “Blow!”. Combining digital textures, funk inflected sax and an assured groove, this lament to doomed love in chiaroscuro also comes with a self-directed video, courtesy of RedChartreuse.

If you don’t know Joviale yet, please be sure to add her immediately to your radar. After having cut her teeth on London’s live circuit, the artist met Bullion, the experimental pop producer who worked for the likes of David Byrne, Paul Epworth, Westerman and Sampha amongst others. Together, they recorded her debut EP, Crisis, in which she explores tension, space, and indie and soul instrumentations. During the recording process, Joviale Tshabola was also collecting various fabrics and materials, cutouts from fashion editorials and religious imagery, creating a patchwork of “soundscapes and treasures from different cultures”. “It’s my method of weathering a crisis,” she explains.

On her new single, “Taste of the Heavens”, Joviale draws inspiration from Greek mythology, focusing on the myth of Narcissus in particular. In her own words:

That feeling of obsessional focus becomes what you become dependent on, like whatever substance one needs to function be it: asocial/professional situation or your morning routine. It’s easy to become so overtaken by certain habits you don’t realise they exist…until you relieve yourself from them.[/su_quote]
