A few weeks before the release of their sophomore album, Maybe We Could, Melbourne’s Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam have just unveiled a propulsive new single. Contrasting ecstatic club-friend arrangements and melancholic lyrics about an imbalanced relationship, “Somehow” is a pure Kllo track.

“‘Somehow’ is one of the dancier tracks on the album and one of the more difficult ones to finish,” they explained. “This song is probably the closest to ‘Virtue‘ both musically and the way in which it unfolded. It went through many different incarnations before arriving at its final state. Although gruelling at times, we consider this process to be a positive thing. The harder songs to finish are usually the ones people connect with most. It’s just a matter of simplifying the ideas once we’ve over worked them.”

The accompanying visuals are made up of footage of the duo’s first trip to Russia on tour late last year. Cry/Dance below.

Melbourne duo Kllo (Chloe Kaul + Simon Lam) recently announced the release of their sophomore album with uplifting single “Still Here“. On the new offering, “Insomnia,” they opt this time for intimate R&B textures and explore emotional jet-lag, when two persons are experiencing the same relationship with different feelings. This notion of romantic distance was actually inspired by the creative process of the track which was written from separate locations, when the two cousins were in North America independently.

“It’s one of our favourites off the album and is heavily influenced by our time in North America,” they explained. “The song is about laying in bed fantasising that you’ll give your all to something and that someone else will too, but knowing deep down it will never happen. The moment of the night where you can’t switch off and differentiate your truth from your imagination.”

It has been almost three years since Kllo shared their debut album Backwater. After an extensive worldwide tour and some parallel solo projects, the Melbourne-based duo, comprising cousins Simon Lam and Chloe Kae, is now readying the release of its new full-length project. “In the past, we’ve tried to speed things up and push away from that…but now we’re sitting where it feels comfortable to us,” Chloe explained about the creative process behind Maybe We Could. “Comfortable but also daring, because we know it’s not as polished in certain ways. We’re doing us, we’re doing Kllo. We’re a bit older now. We aren’t compromising as much on this album. It’s a little bit classier and more tasteful this time around.”

The 10-track project is introduced by the lead single “Still Here,” which once again plays on the contrasts between visceral garage beats and Chloe‘s velvet-like and vulnerable vocals. “This was such a hard song to put together for so many reasons,” they stated on their Instagram. “It went through many versions and was sent to the trash many times. But we pursued it, put everything into it and tried our hardest to make something special for you.” Luckily, the song is still here…

“Still Here” also comes with a Matt Sav-directed video, which beautifully depicts the struggles of a relationship, perhaps metaphorically addressing their own situation, as they almost put an end to their creative partnership before starting to work on this new project.

“I wanted the video to be a poetic depiction of two people staying in a relationship beyond its logical end,” the director explained. “I explored the interplay between love, obsession, imagined futures, lived pasts and the insanity that can be found in between. In our relationships, especially without good definitions around what love really means to us, we find the edges of freedom and responsibility blurring.”

One half of Kllo (the other being her cousin Simon Lam) since the formation of the duo in 2014, Melbourne’s Chloe Kae has now decided to express her creativity in solo. “It has been an amazing experience working exclusively with Kllo, but it feels like the right time to step out on my own, connect with other artists and experiment a little more,” she explains.

Coming with this good news, the artist, who is now based in Los Angeles, has just unveiled two new songs, which actually operate as an extension of the duo’s music. Produced by Machinedrum, the melancholic and airy main single, “Misconception”, recalls the excellent R&B of “Potential” and “Back To You“. With its propulsive electronic beat and UK Garage inspirations, the B-side track, “Recluse,” is more reminiscent of their 2017’s album Backwater. Two complementary directions that prefigure something even more exiting: an upcoming album, due out later this year.

Alongside of their world tour which started a few days ago, Melbourne’s Kllo open a new chapter in their career with “Back To You”, their first track of 2019 and the first single taken from their forthcoming album, due out next year. Veering from intense and dense electronic textures to intimate atmospheres, the duo consisting of musicians and cousins Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam have been in perpetual evolution since we added them on our radar back in 2016, with their single “Bolide“. With “Back To You”, they continue to wipe out the lines between pop, R&B, and electronic, as already heard in their recent singles “Candid” and “Potential“, and reflect once again on the complexities of romance. About this tender and bittersweet new offering, Kllo explained:

Like the previously shared “Potential“, their new single “Candid” pursues the exploration of new soundscapes with a syncopated groove that interweaves UK garage, pop and R&B.
