[su_dropcap style=”simple”]M[/su_dropcap]ISSIO, the band from Austin, Texas is hard to pin down. Listening to their music, it soon becomes apparent that this is a band completely unconcerned with traditional genre trappings. They approach their brand of electronic-based alternative music in a way that avoids some of the still-developing cliches of the indie pop genre. MISSIO finds the sweet spot between electronic and alternative music on “Hey You, Remember My Name”

The duo made up of Matthew Brue and David Butler is making some of the most interesting music of the year, bar none. They may be a fairly new band, but it’s clear that they’re writing and producing music at a higher level than you would typically associate with a group just finding its footing. “Hey You, Remember My Name,” the standout from their EP, encapsulates everything great about their sound.

The song begins with a simple synth that slowly builds into a wall of sound and the closest thing to a central chorus that appears in this song. It approaches crescendo with a wide variety of instruments combining their melodies into something huge–and then it all quiets in an instant. The vibrant intro is quickly discarded as the first verse starts in earnest over a memorable piano-based production. But as suddenly as any one segment can be introduced, it can be gone.

“Hey You, Remember My Name” sounds like the intersection of several different songs, in the best way possible. Never do the disparate elements come together as well as they do during the outro. Easily one of the most surprising pieces of music I’ve heard all year, the mid-song genre shift works on every conceivable level to push the already great song into another space altogether. Their second EP “I Don’t Even Care About You” was released June 17th, hosting “Hey You, Remember My Name” and 4 other tracks.
