New York City duo Me Not You are back with a stand alone single, “Imagine That”, which was written just after the Texas school shooting of last week. Today, we can see in the news that another tragedy happened yesterday in the US. It looks like it’s never going to stop.

While politicians and lobbies are fighting to regulate or not the licence to bear and use firearms, Me Not You adopt a singular point of view as the lyrics of “Imagine That” are inspired by the words one could have said to a gunman before he took action. The atmospheric layers and wistful vocals particularly lift the track. It sounds like one of their best releases since their aptly named debut “Bulletproof” last year. Tune in below.

Thanks to “Surfers“, “Eventually” and “Everafter“, the duo gathered thousands of streams over Spotify and the attention of the entire internet. Mixing effective choruses, with electro-rock inspired sounds, they have shown their ability to blend genres that no one was expecting. Their last single “Chemical Cure” is about bad days, and how we try to overcome them, as Me Not You explained:

The track is inspired by that moment when you get to see someone for the first time and you just seem to be drawn by this new presence. In between pop sounds and electronic vibes, she sings: “she seems so familiar, but I barely know her, I’m in love but insecure”. The duo explains what inspired “Surfers”:

Even if the track is short (2min), we can’t blame them for going directly to the point. The duo delivers a personal rendition about letting things go, specially toxic old relationships. That instant when you can’t look back, and it feels like a relief. The track expresses that juncture with unearthly vocals and a dreamy production. About the track, Me Not You explained to us over an email:

[su_quote]we wrote “Eventually” almost a year ago, right when we started the band, and kept it in our back pocket until we felt the time was right. now that we’re prepping our next ep “Reckoning 2”, it felt like it has its proper home. it’s a personal song for me… a sort of hyping up of myself to the idea of squashing the beef with someone. the baggage of relationships can linger, and it does no one any good to keep that shit around.[/su_quote]

Me Not You released their debut track while preserving some mystery about them. Nevertheless, the recent changes that were made on their social media pages were enough to guess that Little Daylight were done and that the former trio was now a duo (Nikki Taylor + Eric Zeiler). You can be reassured about their music, though; the band kept the strength of their previous project as proved by the release of their debut “Bulletproof”, which received massive love from the blogosphere.

On “Relief”, Me Not You abandon the aerial sounds for a 90’s alt-rock sound that is reminiscent of bands such as Garbage and No Doubt. The track is energetic, liberatory, and peppered with some drops of confidence. As lead singer Nikki Taylor explains:

What is particularly appealing about Me Not You‘s debut track is the fact that they take the opposite course to what we can already hear everywhere on the mainstream radios. The song is timeless, both from the past (the 90s if we refer to the grungy artwork and the diluted guitars) and the future.

They lyrics are quite universal and can talk to everyone. As written in the press release, Me Not You‘s “Bulletproof” encapsulates the swirling uncertainty of a personal crossroads. We can find back this feeling into the soprano vocals that are shot up in the air like an aerial acrobat in between two flying trapezes. They are dreamlike, loaded with hope and despair at the same time.
