It has been eight long years since Neon Indian released an album, but it doesn’t mean that Alan Palomo decided to retire from the studios. Actually, the chillwave trailblazer was working on a new NI record – from which his 2019 politically-charged single “Toyota Man” was probably an appetizer – until the pandemic. The quarantine altered his initial plans and made him rethink the whole project. Instead, he will drop his new long-format, World of Hassle, for the first time under his given name.

Last month, Alan Palomo already unveiled “Nudista Mundial ’89”, a Mac DeMarco-assisted track, off of the 13-track project. Today, he is back with “Stay-at-Home DJ”, another classic summer track that reminds me of George Michael at times – the sax, 80s arrangements and warm croon can explain a lot. Welcome back to the Club Tropicana.

“This is the song that started the whole conversation,” he stated. “My brother and I wrote it back in 2019 and performed it on the last Neon Indian tour. It signaled a change in direction I’d been looking for but had yet to really know what to do with. When things slowed down during the pandemic I dusted it off and from its uncontrollable outgrowth came World of Hassle.”

A few weeks after the Johnny Jewel remix of “Bonbon” hit our in-home dancefloors, Paris-born, Austin-based synth-pop starlet Lou Rebecca returns with new visuals for “To Keep You,” the closing track of her debut album Restless. This dreamy cut is described as a “soliloquy on loss and keeping loved ones alive through memory.” Directed by the artist herself, the mysterious, metaphorical video stars Neon Indian‘s Alan Palamo (who actually produced the song), a menacing snake, as well as identical twins. Four years after his excellent album Vega Intl. Night School, Neon Indian returns with his first song in Spanish. “Toyota Man” is an upbeat slice of funky chillwave, with satirical lyrics about immigration and the American dream. At this time of worldwide identitarian closure and extremism, this pro-immigrant anthem is more than welcome.

In the self-directed video, Alan Palomo recreates his own story, from Monterrey to Austin. It also features a piñata version of Trump, that we would love to smash but actually not for the candies it contains, as well as a nod to Bob Dylan‘s politically charged visuals for “Subterranean Homesick Blues“. About the video, Palamo explained:

[su_quote]“Toyota Man” was filmed along the road map of what essentially was my path to American citizenship: Monterrey, the Nuevo Laredo border, San Antonio, and finally Austin. The process is a multiple decade commute known by many Latinos and other Americans. Though my music has always been generally apolitical, I realized when recording this song that it was impossible to write biographically (in the rhetorical context of the Trump administration) without being entirely that: political. The story of my family, which before felt commonly American, was suddenly politicized. Recognizing the absurdity of it all, I thought it would be refreshing to address the social narrative around immigration through comedy — nods to Benny Hill, misremembered San Antonio car commercials, and School House Rock. My family and I had a ton of fun making this and I hope it’s equally as fun to watch. Enjoy![/su_quote]

More than three years after his excellent album “Vega Intl. Night School“, Neon Indian has shared a brand new track, “Heaven’s Basement (Theme from 86’d)”, which is actually the theme song of a short movie directed by no one else than Alan Palomo himself. The movie 86’d was released earlier this month in the US and features Buddy Duress, Lindsay Burdge, and Mitzi Akaha. We don’t have any info about any upcoming album from the artist but it’s already great news to have a new Neon Indian‘s track in our ears! Listen below.

Alan Palomo, also known as Neon Indian, just released a video for “Annie.” The track was the lead single taken from his last excellent LP “VEGA INTL. Night School.” In the self-directed video, the artist is still exploring the city in order to search this girl! One year after, we really hope he will find her soon!

In the video, you will notably see karaoke lyrics, tape recorders, huge telephones and other iconic items from the 80s and 90s. It is in the line with the previously-released videos for “The Glitzy Hive” and “Techno Clique.” The character of Annie is played by Leanne Macomber from Young Ejecta.

Neon Indian is playing a crazy DJ in a rather insane party where someone dies over a chicken leg. His videos have been always impressively cinematographic since he attended a Visual Art school during his studies so he always uses his previous experience as a filmmaker to give a very special treatment to any of his videos.

Neon Indian will be back to Europe to make a little tour around some festivals like Primavera in Barcelona. Some members of the team will be there so stay tuned for the pictures !
