Following up to “This Trip” and “Fell In A Hole“, Alexandra Mackenzie aka Petra Glynt shares a new single before the release of her upcoming album. Once again, the uptempo track has a social dimension as the artist is – almost – rapping about capitalism’s fails. About the track, she detailed:

[su_quote]”Up To The People” comes from the year 2013. It’s about the end of the Occupy Movement and the globally internalized realization that the world is controlled by a 1% elite and how strong we really are as the 99% for our sheer numbers and diversity. There’s power and beauty in feeling that. That year was a poignant brain shift for me and I was empowered by my own rage and in awe of brave people and community organizing for the sake of challenging capitalism and the 1% elite. This song is basically giving props to those people.[/su_quote]

The Canadian artist has also collaborated with her friends of Doldrums for a twisted and tougher version of the track.

Petra Glynt aka Alexandra Mackenzie caught us with her recent releases ‘This Trip‘ and ‘Fell In A Hole‘. The artist, who was the first to be signed on Damian Taylor‘s new label, has now announced her debut LP ‘This Trip’. It was originally self-produced and recorded in Mackenzie‘s Montreal apartment, and she says Taylor’s mixing of the album breathes “new life and energy” into her songs.

Petra Glynt‘s debut album ‘This Trip’ will be released on October 22 via Vibe Over Method.

Following up this announcement, Petra Glynt also shared a video for ‘Fell In A Hole’ that she co-directed with Lesley Marshall.

About this creation, the artist detailed:

[su_quote]The song is about resource extraction, about humans taking more then what is sustainable for the planet. It’s also about the difference in outlook between animals (in this case a bird) and humans when it comes to the environment. An animals doesn’t look at ways to dominate nature, it looks for food, shelter, etc., while humans find ways to cut it up own it and make a profit- basically in every possible way we can get away with.[/su_quote]

She also added:

[su_quote]The video is meant to show who is responsible for the over-extraction of natural resources – the corporation. I play a narcissistic CEO not too dissimilar from the president of the United States and her staff of equally narcissistic and greedy office workers. Together we perform redundant office tasks while the world burns on the news broadcast. The video is essentially showing the insanity of corporate interest as tied to the fate of the planet. We shot this video in my apartment in Montreal with no budget. I feel so fortunate to have worked with such a wonderful cast and crew of femme-identifying magical people. <3[/su_quote]

Once again, Petra Glynt masters the use of rhythmic samples in her new single ‘Fell In A Hole.’ The extravagant track is notably marked by loud drums, tons of effects and very strange vocals processing. In this new single, she takes a -critical- bird’s eye view on Human activity as she detailed:

How different their view is of the landscape and natural world below as they fly above looking for a place to land, food to eat, shelter, etc. and how it greatly differs from a human’s view of it based on how we use it and treat it, specifically in reference to resource extraction and how overconsumption has visibly shaped the landscape. Take a look at ariel photography of the Alberta tar sands for example.[/su_quote]

Toronto’s producer Alexandra Mackenzie, better known as Petra Glynt, is back with “This Trip”, the first single to be released from her debut LP with artist and record producer Damian Taylor‘s new label Vibe Over Method. On this eccentric piece of “art punk with vibrato”, Glynt is more relevant than ever with a unique sound proposition conveying an important message.

In this over-digitalized world, Petra Glynt places men face to face with their responsibilities as world citizens with “This Trip”

“This Trip” is reminiscent of Björk‘s “Declare Independence” (Damian Taylor actually collaborated with Björk on “Vespertine”). It’s a mystical, powerful, tribal and primitive pop track where Petra Glynt is a shaman giving the alert to a tribe of passive people living life and its issues via digital stimulations. The rhythm is wild and serious, giving the track the power of a molten lava flow or a tsunami. “This Trip” places men face to face with their responsibilities as world citizens. If you don’t change and act, likes and shares won’t be enough to save us.

Who hasn’t endlessly scrolled a news feed just to spend some time? Liking, commenting pictures or words that deal with total superficiality or being content with reading (only) news articles titles about major and vital issues. In this social media society, where post-truth seems to be more important than actions, we eat information just like any other drugs without moving any parts of our bodies except the index finger to click and scroll.

As the artist explained to The FADER over email:

I wrote ‘This Trip’ almost two years ago,[…]It was potent then and it is more so now. It is the product of my frustrations between the mounting global climate crisis and the presence of digital distractions – the kind that isolate us and make us passive consumers of information. Also the kind that give us false, fleeting feelings of gratification – patting us on the back for no tangible achievement whatsoever. I ask, how can we move forward this way? The song is a general call for urgency.
