True to the HighClouds spirit, we’ve once again tried to shine a light on overlooked releases and new or under-the-radar artists alongside some more familiar names. And yes… for the second year the same artist is topping our Best Songs list. At this point, it’s safe to say we’re obsessed. We know these lists are completely subjective and that ranking music can feel a little weird at times but these are the records we’ve had on repeat over the past 12 months. More importantly, in a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, highlighting lesser-known and often overlooked artists remains the very essence of our blog. We hope you’ll take the time to dive into the artists and projects you might not know yet.

Like last year, the list is ordered alphabetically, because the “real” ranking changes every day depending on our mood. That said, if you’re looking for a top three, keep an eye on Oklou, Nourished By Time, and Smerz.

R. Missing is a shadowy electronic duo known for their moody, noir-tinged sound that blends synthpop, coldwave, and dreamlike vocals. With an elusive presence and cinematic aesthetic, they’ve cultivated a mystique that matches their music: elegant, melancholic, and always a little bit off-kilter.

The band has long been releasing their work, single by single, rather than in albums. Their previous three songs from earlier in 2025, “Pony Yeah,” “Dear Contests,” and “Telepolartears” are also excellent and are very much worth checking out.

Hailing from New York City, R. Missing (vocalist Sharon Shy + musician Henry “Toppy” Frost formerly of The Ropes) have unveiled a new track, “Crimeless,” as well as three remixes from the likes of GusGus and The KVB. A nocturnal and atmospheric darkwave offering, the track possesses what we can call a Johnny Jewel vibe, and could be the soundtrack of a David Lynch movie (it’s actually released via Sugarcane Recordings, a label that has released some of his music).
