Earlier this year, Copenhagen-based coldwave and synth-pop act Lust For Youth released their amazing self-titled album, which notably features “By No Means” (one of our favourite tracks of the year so far). Now back on tour, the pair have unveiled a video for “INSIGNIFICANT”, another highlight of the record which actually echoes the bitterness and danceability of “By No Means”. “You grow up to be someone quite insignificant,” they sing on an infectious beat.

According to the band, the accompanying video is made of “highlights from our summer that we spent in our hometown Copenhagen, trip to Bruxelles and Paris. Dedicated to our friends.” Watch and check their full itinerary below.

In case you missed it, Norwegian multitalented musician and writer Jenny Hval is readying the release of her new album The Practice Of Love, which was inspired and named after Valie Export‘s 1985 drama movie and that seems to sound a bit less experimental and challenging than some of her previous works (“it unspools with an almost deceptive ease,” according to the press release). She has already shared the excellent lead single “Ashes To Ashes” – which is anything but deceptive – and she’s now back with another amazing single, “High Alice”, which was notably inspired by Kylie’s trippy masterpiece “Confide In Me”. About the track, she stated:

[su_quote]For a while, this song felt like my entire album. I had no idea what the rest of it would be, just a feeling like this song and the title, the two words ‘High Alice,’ would get me there. My guiding stars at the time were Clarice Lispector’s The Hour of the Star and Kylie Minogue’s ‘Confide In Me.’ Maybe High Alice is the narrator of this album. I don’t know how I wrote it, it was automatic. But I found it really funny that I mentioned the sea three times. High Alice goes to all the places I have taught myself to avoid, like the four Big Themes: Love, death, life, the ocean. The ocean. The ocean.[/su_quote]

Drawing inspiration from early-80s synth-pop, cold and darkwave, and the mighty bass playing of New Order‘s Peter Hook, Black Marble is the brainchild of Chris Stewart. After having left New York for Los Angeles, Stewart started to write and record his third album that will be released for the first time on Sacred Bones. About this new record, he detailed:

[su_quote]The album comes out of seeing and experiencing a lot of turmoil but wanting to create something positive out of it. I wanted to take a less selfish approach on this record. Maybe I’m just getting older, but that approach starts to feel a little self-indulgent. Like, ‘Oh, look at me I’m so complicated, I get that life isn’t fair,’ It’s like, yeah, so does everyone. So with this record, it’s less about how I see things and more about the way things just are. Seeing myself as a part of a lineage of people trying to do a little something instead of trying to create a platform for myself individually.[/su_quote]

Definitely brighter and less hazy, the lead single of the album, “One Eye Open”, seems to take some distance from the gloom of his previous records. According to the artist, the track is about the idea of an artist as sort of sacrificial lamb. He then added:

[su_quote]We seem to like when our public figures take a fall, which sort of makes sense considering societies long-standing desire to publicly flay the fortunate as catharsis, but I’ve always found it ironic that artists/musicians seem to fall into this category as well considering the disparity in income between say, a famous actor and a middling indie musician. Either way, ‘One Eye Open’ is loosely based on the visual metaphor of a high wire artist in a three-ring circus who elicits ooh and aahs from the crowd, but after a while starts to perform with one eye open as they grow restless.[/su_quote]

Lust For Youth, the Copenhagen-based synth-pop duo comprising of Hannes Norrvide and Malthe Fischer, recently announced the release of their self-titled sixth album with the song “Great Concerns”. They’re now back with the infectious single and closing track “By No Means”. Channeling New Order and Pet Shop Boys, the duo stands out with this emo and decadent track which sounds definitely dance-y and yet so tough. Boston-based singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler is back with a new track and the announcement of a new album for this fall. The follow-up to her 2016’s LP “Strangers” was co-produced with Lawrence Rothman and Justin Raisen and features an impressive female casting: Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Kristin Kontrol, Patty Schemel on drums, Mary Lattimore on harp, and experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin on strings.

The album is introduced to us with its title track “For My Crimes”, which is a beautiful ballad where she begs not to be remembered for her crimes. The backing vocals are signed by Angel Olsen. “Does a vampire menstruate?” Jenny Hval wonders in “Female Vampire”.

“Female Vampire” is the story of a vampire as old as time who scouts the dance floor in search of fresh blood. She is one thing and the other too. Ageless, a traveler, she comes from history and thrives in the present. She’s restless and tired, doesn’t want to kill but her lustful thirst leaves her no choice. She is fiction. She is reality. She is a mutant Orlando and the artist herself touring the world, “always up at night, jet lagged, playing late night shows – and by day she is quietly resting over an Arp Odyssey synthesizer while a black van drives her around Europe and America.”

The song itself is a stratified bundle of truth and fantasy hold together by a sticky rivulet of menstrual blood, a “white and red toilet roll chain which ties together the virgins, the whores, the mothers, the witches, the dreamers, and the lovers,” as Hval gorgeously put in an official statement.

“Vampires, lunar cycles, sticky choruses, and the smell of warm leaves and winter.”

Crepuscular and visceral, stretched-out vespers murmured for a good late-night hunt, the song asserts itself like a body even when its physical qualities evaporate in choirs of layered vocals. It progresses like a viscous fluid liquefying, the undergrowth of drone-y beats turning more urgent, more hypnotic as the seconds go by. Dead and alive, like a vampire, like menstrual blood, it’s like watching a Dario Argento classic half-awake half asleep, the colours sharpened and the edges blurred.
