Chilean-American artist Saint Mesa returns with shamanic calling “Murky”

Saint Mesa’s new single “Murky” is his first independent release.

Saint Mesa, born Danny McCook, came onto the scene almost two years ago with “Jungle” quickly garnering a million streams on Spotify. McCook was then signed to Interscope Records and got extra attention after being featured in ads for H&M and Puma as well as popular TV shows. Today, he is independent and makes the most organically created body of work he has ever made.

Fueled by tense opening soundscapes, “Murky” is a darkly colored piece that captivates the listener from the get-go. The Californian multi-instrumentalist takes us into an altered state of consciousness through an arsenal of gradually intensifying percussion driven by menacing humming and spasmodic guitar plucks. Using almost indigenous sounding drums while chanting prophetic lyrics dramatically, Saint Mesa orchestrates what sounds like a spiritual ceremony. Like during a shamanic extraction, he invokes spirits to remove misplaced energy.

The track is without an ounce of unnecessary texture or sound, but what really clinches Mesa the win is the climactic array of strings giving grandeur to the scene halfway through the song. A moment where all spiritual, natural and animal forces connect with his eclectic influences to carry the listener on an epic journey to a world of sand and rocks such as one might expect from the Chilean Atacama desert. Now at a turning point in his career with his first release in almost a year, Saint Mesa breaks free from his anxieties on “Murky” which is a track that precisely fuels the desire to tread through the murky water to find clarity. In the end, most of life is the art of the latter, and Saint Mesa is certainly not an exception as he bounced back from dark places notably overcoming a mystery illness during his youth. Reborn, once again.

Some weeks ago, Saint Mesa made a huge debut with “Jungle” the title track of his 4-track EP that is available today on all the streaming platforms. Indeed, the artist made it into the most popular playlist and has notably gathered over 80k streams in less than 42hours on Spotify! Today, the artist shares his 4-track “Jungle EP” and releases a new single: “Roses“.

Besides a solid music production, Saint Mesa can also count on an original storytelling. Indeed, as we explained it when he released his debut track “Jungle“, the artist was hospitalized for two years and this release after a long forced isolation is almost a miracle. Stronger than ever, the artist made his live debut at “It’s A School Night” on October 24 and releases today his “Jungle EP” via Interscope.

Saint Mesa debuts a forward-thinking pop tune with “Jungle”

Twenty one-year-old artist Danny McCook, aka Saint Mesa, has bounced back from a serious illness, which was threatening his life, creating forward-thinking pop. Listen to his debut track “Jungle” released now via Interscope!

The artist, who is an autodidactic multi-instrumentalist, was recording and composing tracks before 17. In the meantime, he was also developing a career as a visual artist. Nevertheless, a mystery illness forced him to isolate for a long period.

As Saint Mesa explains it:
[su_quote]When I was writing these [songs], I was in a really dark place. There came a point in time where I was on the hospital bed for the fifth time and just sort of gave up and accepted whatever my fate would be.[/su_quote]

Luckily, he started to get better one day and with a new vision about life, he started traveling around California while appreciating the natural beauty of the world surrounding him. During the trip, he was fleshing out songs and documenting these travels with his brother : the photographer and visual artist Isaac McCook. This collaboration has become the artwork of Saint Mesa, including the Jungle EPs cover – shot in the sand dunes near the Mexican Border.

Now, this young artist from Mission Viejo, California has a brand new vision on life:
