Listening to Takykardia‘s new track is like stumbling upon a delicate flower in full bloom: “Waving” charms with a soothing melody, refined texture and thoughtful lyrics. The self-proclaimed pop wizards have soaked in influences from a colourful palette of genres, and they’ve done their homework figuring how to employ them to their advantage.

As if tuning in on the radio just in the right moment, the listener enters the song to Luna Matz breathing out the line: “Cause I don’t like to wait”. Her voice is driven by patience and restlessness simultaneously, exposing the struggle people “running out of their twenties” face when navigating romantic relationships. “I don’t wanna sip wine with a stranger and test whether or not we’re a good match. I’m a romantic and I’d love to be completely swept away,” says the singer of her aversion to dating.

It may be hard to find a partner for life, but it’s easy to get swept away by the lustrous instrumental loops that exceed into joyous curls on several occasions throughout the song. The keyboardist David Nedergaard and drummer Troels Dankert provide a foundation which is enriched and embellished by three musicians joining the band on this track: guitarist Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh, bassist Janus Bagh and harpist Selma Judith Trier.

Working hard over the past couple of years, Takykardia have slowly but surely made a name for themselves in the Danish music scene. The core line-up, comprised of singer Luna Matz, drummer Troels Dankert‘s and David Nedergaard on keys, is now joined by guitarist Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh and bass player Janus Bagh for latest single “Poor Little Anxious Me”.

With this new configuration, not only does Takykardia’s musical landscape become more expansive, but it also creates an enhanced listening experience. The multi-faceted nature of “Poor Little Anxious Me” hurtles itself along at full speed. It’s relentless from the vicious opening whisper, spat out by Luna Matz.

Referencing Britney Spears’ 2007 breakdown as well as vulnerabilities of a personal nature, Luna Matz works her anxieties out in a self-referential way. Of the track, she said: “I’m not afraid to expose myself and the lyrics pretty much speak for themselves. They are completely honest and contain a good portion of self irony. The title is definitely a nod in that direction.”

Utilising their various musical influences, from trip-hop to dream pop, Takykardia draw the listener into their warped and kaleidoscopic universe and refuse to let go. Stopping, starting and then going full throttle again, “Poor Little Anxious Me” is unafraid to experiment. With buzzing synths and jazz-inspired drum loops, it has an energy that’s impossible to break.

Each element leads up to a cathartic release that finally sees its fruition in the final minute of the track. “Poor Little Anxious Me” sounds like a frantic burst of inner turmoil, the workings of the mind revealed to the listener. The cyclic nature of the track, with its mirrored opening and closing lyric of “And you know that it provokes me when you say ‘that’s so typically you’/You know nothing about me, baby,” is reminiscent of the way in which the mind often drives our thoughts in circles; we can ruminate over our issues endlessly, but often, conclude exactly where we began.

Who cares if you’re back to the starting point, the journey was so beautiful.

Between the massive wildfires raging across California and domestic terrorists shooting up restaurants and synagogues, it’s been a pretty miserable, helpless couple of weeks in the States. Thankfully, Takykardia‘s new single, “Ritula,” has arrived at just the right moment, accompanied by a sweet and joyous music video you just can’t help smile at.

The Danish trio starts things off with singer Luna Matz‘s seductive vocals over three chords played on a Rhodes — a minimalist counterpoint to the huge production that’s still to come — sounding a little like Portishead in a major key. As background vocals, synth padding, and wobbly bass are gradually added to the mix, Takykardia‘s song builds anticipation and creates a growing sense that something is about to happen. It’s at almost exactly the halfway point when it all pays off and “Ritula” suddenly turns into a glorious rush of a pop song, with layered vocal harmonies swirling around a lovely string section, all laid over a disco-lite dance beat. The feeling is completely euphoric, just like when a DJ finally drops that perfect track we didn’t even realize we were waiting for and everyone in the club loses their mind.

It’s a superb track in and of itself, made even better by its fantastic video, which Luna Matz also directed. After a couple minutes of the band members, all dressed in matching white jump suits, quietly posing in the middle of the woods, they break out into a synchronized dance routine that is every bit as delightful as the blissful sounds they’re moving to. Get ready to spend an hour in front of your computer, looping the video’s back half in order to learn the adorable choreography. And as Takykardia eventually returns to the chorus mantra of “A hurricane could come by, and I’ll be all right,” we’re left with a sensation of optimism, perseverance, and joy — a kind of salve to help us through these current times.

Copenhagen-based quartet Takykardia is comprised of Luna Matz, David Nedergaard, Thomas Cortes, and Troels Dankert. Each member has a strong but different musical background and this is probably where lies all the beauty and magic of their 5-track debut EP. In between trip-soul, trip-hop, and jazz music, Takykardia break the labels and share a project that amazingly continues what they’ve started this summer with their debut single “Immortalized”.

Two of the tracks from Takykardia‘s EP are featured on the Original Soundtrack of the Danish/Dutch/Swedish movie “HOLIDAY” that was selected for 2018’s SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL. Nevertheless, our favourite song from the EP might be the closing track “Arrhythmia”. Its rhythmic changes perfectly reflect the wide range of influences from the band and also nod to their name which means “an abnormally rapid heart rate”. If it’s a disease, it’s a beautiful one and we hope for them it gets viral.
