“Infinity” is taken from Tan Cologne's album Unknown Beyond, out June 20 via Labrador Records.

Tan Cologne, the New Mexico-based duo composed of Lauren Green and Marissa Macias, return with their hauntingly meditative new single “Infinity,” the latest glimpse into their upcoming third album Unknown Beyond.

With “Infinity,” the band plunges into themes of impermanence and connection beyond the physical world. “‘Infinity’ is about an endless drift into the infinite,” they explain. “The lyrics ‘All pass through known’ evoking comfort of knowing we all enter and leave, though the definitive dimension is the unknown beyond.” It’s a track that feels both grounded and otherworldly—laced with dreamy textures and a sense of spiritual openness that’s becoming a signature of Tan Cologne’s evolving sound.

The video for “Infinity,” filmed in Taos, New Mexico, adds another layer of mystery and introspection. Shot by the duo alongside friend Ricardo de Jesus Tejeda and horse Lupita, the short film follows a man in quiet communion with his surroundings, drifting through a dissolving timeline that ends where it began. “Our music video circles a day or dissolving timeline of a man on a walk and how he finds himself in a meditative drift with a horse, and then returns to the beginning and also the end,” the band shares. It’s a poetic visual to match the song’s vast emotional landscape.

“Infinity” continues to build anticipation for Unknown Beyond, a record born from solitude, loss, and the search for meaning in the unseen. Written and recorded in their home in Taos, the album unfolds like a spiritual journal—its sonic layers echoing with memories, visions, and quiet revelations. “We looked for signs and signals during the recording process,” the duo note. “If we saw a shooting star, imagined a fire burning on a hill, or remembered an old satellite dish in someone’s yard, we explored that lyrically.”

Tan Cologne's third album, Unknown Beyond, is out June 20 via Labrador Records.

New Mexico-based duo Tan Cologne—Lauren Green and Marissa Macias—have long explored the interplay between nature, memory, and sound. With roots in the ethereal landscapes of the Southwest, their music draws on the mystical and the elemental. Renowned for their introspective style and layered soundscapes, they’ve steadily built a reputation for crafting immersive, otherworldly albums that speak to the spirit as much as the senses.

Their third full-length release, Unknown Beyond, is set to arrive June 20th via Labrador Records. This new chapter reaches upward rather than outward, aiming for the skies and the great unknown. According to the press release, it’s a dreamy, metaphysical exploration—an attempt to connect with something greater than ourselves. Created in solitude at their Taos home, the album reflects on personal loss and change, using celestial imagery and intuitive moments as lyrical maps through grief and transformation.

The first glimpse into this new world comes with the track “Cloud of Mirrors.” It’s a woozy, slow-motion drift through shimmering guitars and glistening vocals, all anchored by gentle, pulsing beats. The duo describe the song as “about life happening to you and having to deal with whatever is handed to you… knowing we are all interconnected and a part of the disaster and the beauty.” The accompanying video matches the song’s surreal mood, inviting viewers to get lost in a dreamlike haze.

Tan Cologne‘s new song, “Visitation”, is out now via Labrador Records.

Hailing from New Mexico, the State where the Roswell incident (and all the subsequent conspiracies) took place in 1947, Tan Cologne crafts gauzy soundscapes that also evoke something cosmic from another universe. On their 2020 debut album, Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico, the interdisciplinary artists, Lauren Green and Marissa Macias, explored, amongst other themes, the mysteries and oddities of New Mexico. This sense of mystique also inspired their dreamlike new track, “Visitation”, which boasts an atmospheric, almost surrealist, languor.

“This song was inspired by communications with otherworldly beings,” they stated. “We recorded the instrumentation and developed the lyrical concept through envisioning crossing into unknown dimensions where other beings teach and share through ancient ways.”

“Floating Gardens” is taken from Tan Cologne‘s sophomore album, Earth Visions Of Water Spaces, out September 9 via Labrador Records.

“Floating Gardens” is taken from Tan Cologne‘s sophomore album, Earth Visions Of Water Spaces, out September 9 via Labrador Records.

Two years after Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico, the Southwestern duo Tan Cologne (Lauren Green + Marissa Macias) have just detailed the inspirations of their sophomore record. “We would like listeners to feel they are submerged within or near the presence of water,” the duo stated about Earth Visions Of Water Spaces. “The entire album is about water: droplets of water, atmospheric exchanges of water, and the transformation of Earth by and through water. We were drawn to this through finding shells within the desert landscape. We also read a story in the newspaper about a 300-million-year-old shark fossil found in the mountains in New Mexico thirty miles southwest of Albuquerque. There’s a lot to consider in reflecting on where the Earth’s path has been, and where and what it may be, water of course being the vital experience for existence.”

Following the first offering off the album “Topaz Wave,” the second single, “Floating Gardens,” fleeting as the morning mist, addresses shallow depth ecosystems of water and was inspired by the ancient Aztec gardens of Mexico City known as Xochimilco. “A shimmery glide on the surface of water recalling past civilizations, the song tells a story of a “skin of water” covering the Earth and transforming the landscape into grasslands,” they developed. “We focused on imperfections and inter-dimensional existence.”

Alongside the track, they have also shared a video, filmed by Marissa Macias, which features Pat Lennon, an old-school surfer, woodworker, musician, and surfboard shaper. Watch below.

Tan Cologne‘s “Topaz Wave” is out now via Labrador Records.

Lauren Green and Marissa Macias are Tan Cologne, a New Mexico-based dream pop outfit with country and Americana roots. Both Green and Macias are multidisciplinary artists who work in sonic and tactile modalities, which goes to explain the sensorial complexity of their music. In 2020, they put out Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico, an eight-song collection that saw them try to make sense of a world turning stranger by the day. Now, Tan Cologne are releasing their (still untitled) second album, out later this year.

The first taster off the new record is “Topaz Wave”, an eerie pop song that draws inspiration from the uncanny sounds of Grouper as much as it does from indie-pop bands like Mazzy Star or Cocteau Twins. It’s a strange yet captivating tune – one that offers a fresh take on guitar-based pop music. A song about phosphorescent algae, “Topaz Wave” drowns Green’s and Macias’s vocals under a sea of krautrock-inspired guitars, conjuring an underwater effect that grants it a psychedelic edge.

Tan Cologne wrote “Topaz Wave” beside an arroyo in New Mexico. Speaking about the song, they explained its inception a lot better than I could: “the sides of the arroyo walls are shaped like curved waves – reflecting the experience of tidal and earth transformation, and how the desert land was once ocean.”

The band has also put out an accompanying video for the song. Directed by Carly Short, it features the arroyo that impulsed Tan Cologne to write “Topaz Wave”.

Inimitable duo Tan Cologne follow up record Cave Vaults On The Moon in New Mexico with serene new release, “Heretic

Inimitable duo Tan Cologne follow up record Cave Vaults On The Moon in New Mexico with serene new release, “Heretic Porcelain,” out today via Labrador Records.

Judging from their past releases, Tan Cologne have an insatiable appetite for the strange and unexplored. The duo – made up of interdisciplinary artists Lauren Green and Marissa Macias – released their superbly spaced-out debut album, Cave Vaults On The Moon In New Mexico, earlier this year on Labrador Records. Their newest single “Heretic Porcelain” picks up this thread of expansive, other-wordly music; though this most recent track is a bit more down-to-Earth than Tan Cologne‘s previous gravity-immune offerings.

“Heretic Porcelain” embraces the fantasy elements of dream pop. A dreamier iteration of what groups like Sleigh Bells or Cults are trying to accomplish, the song’s wispy vocals and effervescent guitars shine like a harvest moon. This obsession with the fantastic doesn’t stop with the instrumentals. Tan Cologne seem to have a fascination with language, obvious by their band name and this release’s track title, “Heretic Porcelain”, both of which seem to have been chosen less because of their literal meaning and more for the effect these phrases will have on listeners. The resulting product, this emphasis on the vibe of things rather than the veracity of it, makes “Heretic Porcelain” inherently mysterious and automatically meaningful.

This preference for emotion over explicitness bleeds into the accompanying video for “Heretic Porcelain.” The piece is brimming with expressive images, though it’s not always clear what these images are meant to convey. The girls strum on their instruments as laundry flaps in the wind. In other shots, the pair search through their backyard with a metal detector. A crowd of horses stand in a shimmering field. The final shots show the two burying something, or perhaps digging something up? As white sheet flaps in the wind. The experience is ultimately akin to something between a daydream and a drug trip. Even if the meaning isn’t immediately clear, the themes of searching and wandering are evident and effective.

One of the most pleasantly puzzling and positively promising introductions of 2020, Tan Cologne is ready to sing audiences into a serene, sonic stupor. Check out the video for “Heretic Porcelain” below, premiering exclusive on HighClouds.
