In April, Montreal musician and photographer Tess Roby will unveil the follow up to her 2018 debut record Beacon. The self-produced project is introduced today with “Ideas of Space,” a celestial track with mesmerizing synths and haunting vocals. The drums, courtesy of Austin Tufts, give the single a sense of suspense, a mysterious feeling that also permeates the crepuscular self-directed video. Montreal’s trio Dawn to Dawn (Tess Roby + Adam Ohr + Patrick Lee) recently released a dreamy new single, “Care.” Although it was written on a cold, winter’s night, soon after their meeting in 2018, the track is described as “an ode to summer nights.” It also comes with a 16mm film, directed by Tess Roby, which captures the “the cyclical nature of losing track of time.” Watch, enjoy the ride and support the band via Bandcamp below.

“Care” is the third single from Dawn to Dawn, following up “Meridian” and “A Colour Named By You.”

Dawn to Dawn, the new Montreal trio fronted by multi-talented artist Tess Roby, are comfortable occupying liminal spaces. Their music qualifies as both and as neither dream pop nor electronica. It is as influenced by the dreamy atmospheres of dream pop staples like Chromatics or Slowdive as by the wonky electronic landscapes of Jamie xx and modern R&B. Dawn to Dawn are ending the year on a high note by releasing their first single “Meridian”, a song with a special significance for the group. It is the very first song they recorded together, only some minutes after Tess Roby, Adam Ohr and Patrick Lee first met in person two years ago.

That being said, “Meridian” comes out of effort as much as from a sudden burst of creativity. Just by listening to it, you can tell they spent hours tinkering with it, finding the perfect electronic background that Roby’s lower register singing would pulsate against. They have a couple of cards up their sleeve as well. Halfway through the song, they bring in a line of melody straight out of a barbershop quartet group, and they keep it to harmonise with the main phrases. The trick takes the song up a notch, granting it the sort of immediate earworm that can be missing in this kind of music. We are excited to see what will be the next thing coming from them.

Following up on her hypnotic debut “Ballad 5” and her single and video “Catalyst,” Montreal’s singer-songwriter and photographer Tess Roby has just unveiled a new single from her upcoming LP which was composed with the help of her brother after the loss of her father. As the artist explained, the album was named after a beacon in Lancashire. In her own words:

[su_quote]All the while the Beacon remained effervescent in my mind… Visions of it ablaze on the hilltop, standing motionless while I searched for understanding.[/su_quote]

Tess Roby has just shared a brand new track and video, “Catalyst”, which is a beautiful and melancholic synth-pop piece made of captivating synthesizers arpeggios. The track was written after the death of her father and was notably inspired by her family travels to Lancashire. This probably explains the environment of the accompanying self-directed video. This new single, which announces her debut album, is a perfect fit to the Italians Do It Better catalogue.
