“tokyo” tells the story of that moment when you know that you are falling for someone but sadly, you are running out of time with that special person. That urge of trying the live the present moment. How to enjoy what is going on right now when you know that the time is counted. Comprised of Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford, the duo don’t fail in sharing their 80s inspirations. After sharing their first two singles “take me on” and “love somebody like you”, “tokyo” is getting us even more excited about their promising career.

When Tokyo’s producers KOSMO KAT and HVNS decide to work together, they form an electric duo called iivvyy which blends house music with alt-R&B influences.

Even if KOSMO KAT and HVNS are both evolving on the Tokyo’s boiling underground scene, they have never collaborated together until now. With this new common moniker, iivvyy, the exciting idea turns into something concrete and the duo already shared two singles. Their debut track “want you” starts like if Kaytranada and Disclosure were collaborating together. The techno of HVNS successfully welcomes the soulful vibes of KOSMO KAT and the result is a hybrid track that actually sounds like a huge banger when the drop is coming.

Today, iivvyy shared their new offering “could be”; a track which seems to be more techno-infused but that still keeps this alternative R&B touch. Listen to it below.

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]G[/su_dropcap]ood morning, people. What’s today’s secret word? Today secret word is TEEN! You all remember what to do whenever anyone says the secret word, right? Well, you’re supposed to scream it out loud but this time just wait to listen to “Free Time”, the new song from TEEN‘s imminent and promising “Love Yes”.

“Free Time” continues from where its sister singles had left off: ’80s R&B galore, exquisite, Prince-like and jubilant, but with a more serious lyrical core. It’s girl group music with a tremendous crave for confrontation, sparkly but with no time for bullshit. Little cosmic keyboards, vocal harmonies that frame Teeny Lieberson’s supple voice, hooks and la la la’s, this slice of joyful pop goes hard without losing an inch of its playfulness. Kind of like the Del Rubio Triplets cameos on everybody’s favorite TV show “Pee Wee Playhouse” but with shimmery synths instead of guitars.

The video for “Free Time” was directed by Becca Kaufman, who is perhaps more known as a member of Brooklyn music collective Ava Luna. In its VHS glory, it’s a nod to the perfomances lo-fi legend R. Stevie Moore gave on New York public access television and the interpretative dances of the zodiac that accompanied Sid Harvey Fisher’s “Astrology Songs“. It’s all very ’80s. The director herself can be seen dancing in the video, while the band rocks co-ordinated red outfits.

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]F[/su_dropcap]irst and foremost, TEEN is a family.

Sisters Teeny, Lizzie and Katherine Lieberson and their honorary sibling Boshra AlSaadri have been making music together for a while now. They’ve been doing it as a family does, sharing parts of the same world in ways that are both personal and universal. “Please”, the third cut from their forthcoming third album “Love Yes”, is definitely one of those parts.

Pensive and restrained, “Please” is a decided change from the buoyancy of the first two singles, “All About Us” and “Tokyo“. Written in the middle of a frozen winter, the song sets to music Lizzie‘s thoughts and regrets about her relationship with her late father. The mood is aptly contemplative and the pace slow and calm, as if layers of snow had fallen between the notes and muffled their sounds. The quietness doesn’t lessen the gorgeousness of the song. On the contrary, it enhances it and fills its mourning synths and slight strings with white magic. It’s like walking outside on very cold day, and the icy air knives your lungs but the world keeps being enchanting in its coat of cold beauty and you are moved. If your eyes do get watery, you can blame in on the freezing weather. But please, let “Please” touch you anyway.

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]T[/su_dropcap]EEN is a not a teen anymore: it grew up into a woman with a lot to say.

It’s not a single voice speaking but four. Former Here We Go Magic keyboardist Teeny Lieberson and her sisters Lizzie and Katherine have been making music together for a while now, shifting from the lo-fi psych of their debut “In Limbo” to the art rock-infused R&B of “The Way and Color“, which set the entrance in the band of bassist Boshra Al Saadi. Their third effort, enthusiastically titled “Love Yes”, seems to take its cue from the lush, sleek, soul-like vibes of its predecessor but with a more resolute tone, as if they were replenished by new flowing energies. The record shows a certain strength in content as well, and a feminist one at that: it explores the dynamics between love, sex, power and spirituality in the psyche of the modern woman. Standing in white shirts and shiny jewelry on the album cover, they look like Prince protégées who have read Germaine Greer. And they sound like that too: fully emancipated Vanity and Apollonia, with much more voice and much less lace lingerie.

As a proof, listen to “Tokyo”, a captivating dance pop tune which serves as the album’s second single. Slinky and buoyant like the ’80s, “Tokyo” tells the story of man who fantasizes about leaving his aging wife. Think of a Minneapolis Sound version of Kate Bush‘s “Babooshka“, with which it shares not only the topic, but the perfect catchiness of the chorus as well.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/240372530″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

If you liked “Tokyo”, and we’re sure you did, here’s another treat: “All About Us”, the first cut from “Love Yes”, a delicious and energetic slice of girl group pop that’s actually empowering.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/232752616″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
