In 2019, Weyes Blood announced a trilogy of albums with inaugural album Titanic Rising, which was an observation of doom to come. On Friday, she will unveil the second installment, And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, and this time, we’re in the thick of it. “We’re in a fully functional shit show,” she explains about the context of the project, in which she tries to navigate our current chaotic and instable world.

Before dropping the full album, she’s unveiled a last single “God Turn Me Into A Flower,” which features Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never on keyboards. Revisiting the myth of Narcissus, it’s an otherworldly ballad with nature sounds, bewitching vocals and an ambient-leaning finale. Listen and pre-order the album via Bandcamp below.

Like every December, we close a year of music with our traditional lists. After the Best Albums and Best EPs and Mixtapes, we’re happy to unveil the songs that made 2019 according to our team. Are these the best releases of the year ? Maybe yes, maybe no. But for sure, they represent what we have loved over the 12 months.

2019 is also the end of a decade and, even if the blog did not exist 10 years ago, we will try to share our favourite tracks of this era during the first quarter of 2020.

Finally, I’d like to mention that HighClouds would not be the same without its team of dedicated writers. People don’t always realize it but running a blog and contributing, even only from time to time, requires a lot of energy on top of your full-time job. So thank you to each of you for this.

Firstly, albums are not a thing of the past! Lof of people have claimed that this format was not relevant anymore in the streaming era, but the artists below have proven the contrary this year. Albums remain the best way to fully express an artistic direction and a vision.

Then again, it’s never easy to definitively rank albums so we guess that this list is only a photography of our tastes at this very moment. In one year, it could be totally different…

Finally, if you like any of these releases, and we’re sure you will, don’t forget to support the artists. Streaming is a good start, but it’s unfortunately not enough.

Following up on “Andromeda” and “Everyday,” Natalie Mering, better known as Weyes Blood, unveils “Movies,” an impressive single taken from her upcoming album Titanic Rising. Driven by waves of synth arpeggios and dramatic cellos, the uplifting song explores the sociological power of movies as well as the myths they can give birth to. About the track, she detailed:

[su_quote]We are enamored with Movies. Our generation is the most cinematically saturated of all time. Videotapes, DVD’s, streaming… Spielberg…all of it has thrust us into an endless loop of consumption. They provide formative experiences as children, standing larger than life before our fragile adolescent minds. I wanted to take a look into the emotionally manipulative powers of Movies – how have Movies succeeded in telling the myths of our time? How have they failed (miserably)? What is the consequent effect on a society of beings looking for themselves in the myths on the screen? It’s safe to say that they have failed us, but I can’t help it… I love Movies.[/su_quote]

Of course, “Movies” comes with a video that Weyes Blood directed on top of playing the leading role. Like the album cover, the visuals also include footage filmed underwater. Watch below.

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]M[/su_dropcap]ike Collins will release an Ariel Pink-produced LP under the name of Drugdealer, on September 9 via Weird World. The first single “Suddenly”, which features Weyes Blood, is absolutely amazing. It’s a surprising and groovy pop ballad, with changes of pace and where the piano and the saxophone bring some delightful retro vibes.

It looks like Mike Collins is the Pablo Escobar of music. Indeed, the Los Angeles-based songwriter was involved in a lot of projects (Run DMT/Salvia Plath/the Doobie Sisters/Silk Rhodes) and almost all of them are making reference to illegal substances. It is also known that people taking drugs are super creative!

Drugdealer‘s “Suddenly”, which features Natalie Mering aka Weyes Blood is an infectious proposition and a groovy trip into Mike Collins’ creative new project!

“The End of Comedy – to be released through Weird World on September 9th – is a collection of vignettes – lucid, lysergic and organic – featuring homespun explorations of Carole King­-esque piano ballads, Bacharach-ian orchestration, the psych-­folk of Ultimate Spinach and Hendrickson Road House and even New York City subway jazz, all pulled together by Collins’s deft AOR auteurship and keen sense of humour.”
