“Just Maybe” marks the first in a series of monthly singles from Quinn, leading into a highly anticipated EP later this summer. Built on a hypnotic, swampy slow jam foundation—courtesy of genre-shapeshifter George van den Broek aka Yellow Days, the track fuses warm, lo-fi production with Quinn’s strikingly rich vocal delivery. The result? A textured, emotional soundscape that feels as intimate as it is expansive.

Speaking on the song’s meaning, Quinn shares that it represents “that uncertain space between hope and reality – the push and pull of relationships. It’s about facing uncertainty and learning not to romanticize things that aren’t truly meant for you.” That emotional tension runs through every verse—but with those lush, sweeping harmonies, heartbreak has never sounded so gorgeous and seductive.

Each spring, Brussels’ cultural institution Le Botanique opens the festival season with their inescapable Les Nuits Bota. This year again and before everyone, they bring exciting, emerging and established artists to Belgium, in human-sized venues. First of all, let’s focus on the boiling Belgian line-up and if you’re familiar with HighClouds, all these names should sound familiar. The amazing Blackwave. and YellowStraps will make you move with their chill and groovy vibes. If you prefer cinematic and emotional electronic music, then Haring and Rari are here for you. We take the bet that the two girls of Juicy will energise the crowd with their retro-futuristic R&B and hip-hop music. Ulysse, Pale Grey and Tessa Dixson are certainly the most exciting acts on the Belgian indie pop scene at the moment.

Amongst the international acts that we don’t need to introduce, we’d like to mention the -already sold-out- concert of Charlotte Gainsbourg whose last album “Rest” was particularly good. Impossible to miss the noise-pop os U.S. Girls, the synth-pop odyssey of Porches, the style of Eddy de Pretto and the groove of Jungle.

French acts Malik Djoudi, Royaume, Polo & Pan, Bagarre and L’Impératrice should undoubtedly make memorable sparks. Amen Dunes just released one of the best albums of 2018 so far and he’ll be playing it in Brussels. South African queer artist Nakhane will bewitch you with the songs of his new album “You Will Not Die”. Be ready to dance with pop princess Mabel and to swag with Little Simz. Finally, new alternative sensation Yellow Days will also join the party.

Like us, you are probably following George van den Broek aka Yellow Days since Day 1 or at least since he has been discovered on Soundcloud thanks to his singular demos. Last year, he debuted his very promising ‘Harmless Melodies EP‘ and since then, things seem to turn a global turn as the artist is now on the radar of major publications. The Good Years-signee will release ‘Is Everything OK In Your World?’ EP this fall. It will feature the previously released ‘That Easy‘ and his brand new single ‘Hurt In Love’.

‘Hurt In Love’ is a psychedelic and soulful lament but also one of Yellow Days‘ best tracks.

‘Hurt In Love’ is the striking testimony of a victim of Love. The artist perfectly translates the fact that Love can also be particularly painful. The soundscape is rich and Van Den Broek’s vocals express the inevitable questions of a post-relationship period while losing themselves into the unknown. The psychedelic and soulful lament undoubtedly appears as one of Yellow Days‘ classics.

The video, which was directed by Samuel Travis, was premiered today. Over an email to The Fader, Yellow Days explained:

Yellow Days is the moniker of Haslemere’s George Van Den Broek, a 18-year-old artist who is part of Good Years‘ roster. The young artist already released an excellent debut EP in 2016 and he just announced the follow up one. The ‘Everything OK In Your World?’ EP will also be released via Good Years later this year. The “Harmless Melodies EP” opens with a spoken word segment set to music, one of my all-time favorite ways to introduce a concept and create a musical setting. The excerpt is of John Cleese speaking on the intricacies of creativity. It appropriately sets the stage for the rest of the EP, and immediately presents the thoughtfulness of the artist.

“Your Hand Holding Mine” is really what made Yellow Days a point of interest, and queued him up nicely for a full EP. He sings of the final moments spent with a first love, describing a personal experience that still manages to relate to us all. In “Gap in the Clouds“, Van den Broek sings, “all this time I was just running around, a beautiful mind between those eyes”. The vocals are well executed and full of meaning, reminding me of old jazz guitarists and their soulful singers. The fervent lyrics bring me to reminisce of an era I’ve never lived.

The soulful sounds carry throughout “Harmless Melodies”, making the EP feel like one single journey through old worries and problems of the past. The base guitar present across most of the tracks is well composed and well executed. The organ-style synths lay down a simple yet full backdrop to support the vocals and the story George aims to tell. Perhaps the only discrepancy I have is the lack of tempo change. While a coherent sound is preferred, some variation serves the listener well. Around the sixth track, I start to drift off into my own thoughts, and the tracks go from the forefront of thought to the background noise in my mind. A tempo change would help to alleviate the misgivings of most listeners short attention spans.

Yellow Days‘ “Harmless Melodies EP” is a late edition to 2016’s list of breakout hits. Yellow Days has proven his worth with this masterpiece that soothes the mind and soul. I can’t wait to see what his assuredly long career holds in store.

If the melody sounds quite familiar and inspired by some classics of soul music, the groove and the lo-fi atmosphere remain intact.
