Toronto musician Carlyn Bezic, better known as Jane Inc., is stepping into a powerful new chapter with her upcoming album A Rupture A Canyon A Birth, out in a couple of weeks. The record was shaped by a string of life-altering moments that began when a semi-truck slammed into her broken-down tour van. Though she and her bandmates miraculously walked away unharmed, and even went on to play their scheduled show, the experience cracked something open. What followed was a period of intense transformation: the end of a nearly decade-long relationship and the discovery of early-stage cancer on her vocal cord. Out of that upheaval came an album about survival, rebirth, and the glittering possibilities that emerge from life’s most shattering events.
Her latest single “what if” captures this spirit in vivid detail. The track imagines the aftermath of the crash as a split between Carlyn herself and her artistic alter ego, Jane. In the accompanying video, directed by Lucy Kerr, we see Carlyn wandering city streets and cemeteries before eventually encountering Jane on a rooftop. From there, Jane takes over, dancing with abandon, running through cars, and reveling in wild freedom. The music itself mirrors this energy, pairing disco-driven beats with raw emotion, in something that’s both euphoric and cathartic. As Carlyn puts it, “Carlyn walks away to continue a life in which the accident never happened, leaving Jane (pure, unadulterated, in her final form) to be born, hungry for life.”
