Hannah Lew has long been a quietly influential presence in the U.S. underground, best known for her work in San Francisco post-punk bands Grass Widow and Cold Beat. Now stepping into the spotlight on her own, she’s channeling years of songwriting instinct into her solo project, which blends emotional directness with a dreamy, slightly surreal edge. And as you know, we’re so here for that.
Her upcoming self-titled debut album, out April 10 via Night School Records, captures that spirit beautifully. Written and recorded between her home in Richmond, California and The Best House studio in Oakland with Maryam Qudus, the record showcases Lew embracing a more straightforward pop sensibility while still keeping the emotional complexity front and center. Each track feels carefully shaped, balancing brightness with a gentle sense of melancholy, and reflecting the strange mix of hope and uncertainty that defines the current moment.
Leading the way is the first single and video, “Another Twilight,” a shimmering, pulse-driven synth-pop track that pulls you onto the dance floor while tugging at the heart. The groove carries the song forward as Lew’s melody opens into a soaring chorus, where she sings, “it’s all over baby and I don’t mind… in decline, I take my time…” Hannah Lew describes the track as a moment of acceptance and release: “Another Twilight is a goodbye song . It’s about coming to terms with change and being OK with it. Kind of the turning point where lamenting over a break up turns into ownership of a current state, not dwelling on the past. It’s about moving on!”
