Softmax is back with a brand new track, “No ID,” and it’s one of those funky and groovy songs that instantly pulls you in with its playful self-awareness and sharp production. It even reminded us of the kind of forward-thinking pop the Paul Institute would release: polished, curious, and a little bit mischievous in spirit. Produced by Softmax alongside her longtime partner Sam Hudgens, the track features shimmering guitar lines from James Richardson and is mixed by Joel Ford. Lyrically and conceptually, “No ID” pokes at the strange pressure musicians face to seek validation within the same systems that make releasing music possible in the first place. There’s a knowing irony baked into the song and its rollout, which Softmax leans into with artwork showing her posing rather unenthusiastically in front of oversized photos from her own American wilderness adventures. A subtle wink at the whole promotional ritual.
Originally from Chicago, Softmax grew up playing guitar and keys, soaking in the melodic spirit of her hometown before falling down the rabbit hole of electronic production and its endless creative possibilities. Her music blends a strong pop sensibility with an experimental edge. “No ID” marks her first release since last year’s darker electronic pop era, and 2025 has largely seen her writing toward a future album while also contributing to a CJ Mirra’s soundtrack for surf and environmental documentary The Big Sea.
