Australia-born, Berlin-based duo Baby Smith are made up of Ray Sonder and Saxon Gable, two self-taught musicians who grew up on the east coast of Australia before eventually crossing paths in Berlin. Raised in creative households and surrounded by music from an early age, they both started writing songs young, shaped by their coastal surroundings and a shared instinct for melody. After moving to Berlin separately, they met and quickly formed a creative partnership that led to the birth of Baby Smith in 2023. Since then, they’ve released a couple of EPs, played shows across Europe, and steadily introduced their sound.
Now, they’re gearing up for the release of their debut album Lately, Love Is Dead, out July 10th. Written entirely in their Berlin flat with a stripped-back home recording setup, the record marks a shift toward something more immediate and emotionally charged. Across the album, they explore themes like love and loss, self-doubt, fractured relationships, and a lingering sense of disillusionment with a raw and direct approach, inspired by a particularly intense period in their lives.
To accompany the announcement, the duo have shared “Lately, Love Is Dead”, the album’s title track. It’s a compelling entry point into the record, blending elegant instrumentation, with deeply reflective lyrics. At times, the grace, groove, and dreaminess of the arrangements recall Men I Trust. As the band explains, “The song touches on idol worship and beauty standards. ‘I wanna be pretty, I wanna be sought after, I wanna be someone else, I wanna be somewhere else.’ This comments on the way our capitalist society is built and how it constantly reinforces that we should always want more and we shouldn’t dare to be satisfied with who we are, how we look, where we are in our lives, or our circumstances. Everything is disposable, people are disposable, love is disposable. We honestly think love may be dead right now. The world is in such a dark place, and it’s pretty hard to bear. As people, we are becoming more isolated and individualised.”
The release also comes with a fun interactive mixer, which gives the listeners the chance to dive into the different layers of “Lately, Love Is Dead” and explore the track in a more hands-on way.
