Pet Owner, the project of Swiss musician Lea Mathis, is getting ready to unveil her second album, Second Nature. Following the warm reception of her 2022 debut Natural Behaviour, Mathis continues to refine an indie pop sound that feels both playful and precise. Her music has always balanced experimentation with irresistibly melodic moments, and this new record promises to push that tension even further, hinting at big pop instincts before gently swerving into more unexpected territory.
With “Piece of Gum,” the fourth single from the album, Pet Owner leans into a driving energy. Distorted guitars and glowing synth textures carry the track forward like thoughts that have been waiting far too long to be said out loud. Her silky, airy voice floats just above it all, conveying the emotional weight of things left unsaid and the quiet consequences of keeping them buried, until we ultimately reach the epiphany of finally revealing that “it was too good to be true.” It’s a small window into what it might feels like: tense, reflective, and quietly powerful.
