Catherine Moan’s “Boy” is a heartfelt, synth-pop reflection on identity and belonging.

Catherine Moan is one of our favourite synth pop artists, and for good reason. The Philadelphia-based electronic pop musician crafts time-bending songs that feel both nostalgic and deeply personal, wrapped in dreamy synths and soft-focus emotion. Her project exists somewhere between ’80s pop romance and modern digital intimacy, shaped alone in her bedroom, where she turns solitude into sound. With influences ranging from indie dance to cinematic synth scores, Moan’s music often explores digital love, isolation, and the complicated relationship we have with our own bodies.

Her new release, “Boy,” taps straight into that emotional core. The song is a cover, but it feels profoundly lived-in and personal. In Moan’s hands, “Boy” becomes a tender, shimmering reflection on identity and belonging, as she stated on her Instagram: “‘Boy’ is a cover of one of my favorite tracks from Book of Love (A Philly band!). At its core this song is about wanting to belong but because of your biology or sexuality you will never really be where you want to be. And it’s always resonated really strongly for me after all these years living life as a trans person. I started this cover a while back and it turned out Trey Frye was also covering it at the same time so we smashed our versions together into this.”

Catherine Moan‘s new song “Undo Undo” is our via Born Losers Record.

A few years back, we introduced you to the rising talent Angel Jefferson, known as Catherine Moan, a creative force in the world of electro-pop, crafting music with a nostalgic and dreamy vibe. This Philadelphia-based artist left a mark with her debut album, Chain Reaction, and her collaborative singles alongside another synth pop genius, Primer.

Just last week, Catherine Moan unleashed her latest track, “Undo Undo,” serving as a reminder that in matters of life and heartbreak, there’s no easy Ctrl + Z. The song was co-produced by Trey Frye (of Korine), delivering a glistening and theatrical experience, complete with a captivating retro-inspired music video. Check it out and show your support below!

“Drop It!” is the first single from Catherine Moan’s debut album Chain Reaction, out September 24 via Born Loser Records.

“Drop It!” is the first single from Catherine Moan’s debut album Chain Reaction, out September 24 via Born Loser Records.

Philadelphia’s Catherine Moan makes electronic pop that yearns. Having recorded her debut album Chain Reaction during the quarantine stage of the coronavirus pandemic, Moan themes her bubbly, euphoric songs around the desire for connection when faced with isolation. “Drop It!” – the lead single from her debut – is a prime example of this ethos, showcasing not only a glistening instrumental and diaphanous vocals, but an irresistible knack for melody and lyricism.

Opening with the pulse of a synth-bass and a groovy drum-beat, “Drop It!” calls the listener to get up off their feet and get into the rhythm. The song builds with candy-coated synth accents, reminiscent of CHVRCHES glitz and the Chromatics’ glam. It’s the chorus that truly shines here – Moan commands with the lyrics “sway it down, it’s so sweet! Drop it down and feel the heat,” sung playfully and nonchalantly to capture the feeling of dancing away your depression.

The song’s music video is an excellent feature for Moan’s playfulness and positivity through hardship. Standing in a red karaoke room, alone in a red blazer, she gets lost in the melody and vibes carefree, enjoying wherever the music might take her as she releases tension. Her smile is infectious, capturing the exact shade of optimism imbued within the song’s synthetic textures. Watch and pre-order via Bandcamp below.
