Cape Town’s multi-instrumentalist producer, singer, and songwriter Gourmet has been on our radar for several years now and it’s kind of a pride to follow and cover this artist since the release of his debut single “Animal” back in 2015. Since then, the spaghetti boy has released a bunch of consistent singles, including a Kitsuné release (“There You Go”) and Thunderclap-labelled “Delicious” which made it in our Top 100 Tracks of 2017 list.

Today, Gourmet is back with a sexy and relaxed new single, “Jamaica”, and the artist is clear: he just wants you to take your shirt off and assure the show. So Gourmet and chill!

We don’t know that much about Cape Town-based Gourmet but his ‘spaghetti pop’ music caught us a year ago. Now the artist has evolved and he is going to release a new EP via 1991 Global. Following up to ‘Delicious‘ (which was labelled as Thunderclap on HighClouds), here is the delicious ‘Yellow’ that deals with sexual and emotional anxiety in a funny and irresistible way. As always, the sound is fresh and modern and we are so happy to have followed Gourmet since his beginning on the internet.

With his new single “Delicious”, he transports us to the clubs to make us dance like fools.

To create simple yet catchy choruses seems to be the domain of expertise for the artist. “Yes, I’m delicious” is repeated so many times that you find yourself repeating it over and over again in your head. In many ways, Gourmet is clearly inspired by other artists but still keeping his own surreal identity: he can be compared to Shamir thanks to his unstoppable and infectious production, to Prince for the attention he dedicates into the imagery, to finally Uffie for the aloofness he has in his singing, to make it sound completely effortless. In the end, the track is an overwhelmingly good indie dance track. The best asset of “Delicious” resides on its originality. In a period where all of the pop songs on the radios sound alike, there is literally no other song that sounds like this release.

Gourmet will transport you into his weird and appealing pop universe with his new track “Delicious”

Constructed around calculated messiness, the vocals of the artist take you to his weird planet where no one else but him lives. It can be a rollercoaster for most of you, but trust me, it will be not be a disappointing journey. The artist main focus on this track might be to throw all of the listener’s emotions into turmoil. The extreme take on the electronic sounds could be disturbing for some, a dealbreaker for others, the only answer for sure is that Gourmet creates a strong reaction by the listener.

As I told you in last week’s article, it is only the beginning. Gourmet has a lot to offer. It may be only his third single, but you can feel all the experience behind it.

“Floods” is all about a convincing melancholy you’ll hear in his voice, with an enchanting electro-pop-rock background. Third good singles in a row. And once again, it’s available for free download.

Gourmet is in fact a mysterious emerging pop-rock artist based in Cape Town. Get ready to be hypnotized by this week’s Newcomer and his enlightened pop music.

Intrigued ? Sceptical ? Don’t worry, we were too the first time we watched it.

We discovered this strange but interesting boy a week ago when we came across his song “Animals” on Soundcloud. We were immediately speechless and really curious about this new character. Either by his song, but also by his “just chilling with some random stuff I found in my house while wearing my towel on my head” album cover and “just pouring some papaya on my tiny car” promo video.

The intro of his track “Animals” is made of funny trumpets which could make you think he’s just doing this for kidding but just wait until it starts. You’ll immediately understand how Gourmet is prepared. It may be only the first single he released but he clearly knows what he is doing and all the buzz he’s going to do.
“Animals” shares some particularities with big artists such as Hot Chip or Metronomy, with an instrumental that could sound like Demo Taped‘s ones.
Gourmet made every single sound from scratch like taking sounds that are not supposed to match to make something bigger and flabbergasting. We cannot deny that it announces a bright future for this Newcomer.
