Out on 26 September, portals//polarities was pieced together on the road, in hotel rooms and backstage corners, fed by stolen moments between shows. It hums with the energy of places both real and imagined. Louder and more outward-looking than their earlier work, it takes listeners on a trip through shifting sonic worlds, without ever letting go of that signature Night Tapes magic: whispered vocals drifting over hypnotic instrumentals that feel like time capsules.

More than just a name, portals//polarities captures the essence of Night Tapes’ world. Portals speaks to their uncanny ability to pull listeners into hazy, dreamlike spaces, while polarities reflects the dichotomies at the heart of their music: light and shadow, chaos and stillness, intimacy and expansiveness. It is in this tension, and in these gateways, that their sound truly comes alive.

Their latest single, the trance-like “storm,” is one of their most outstanding. Written in a flash, “like a sneeze,” as vocalist Iiris Vesik told The Line of Best Fit in a recent interview, it spins with the strange pull of chaos and clarity. As the band puts it, “Convenience comes with a cost and annoyance is the price we sometimes pay for connection… Sometimes the things we need to do when a storm is coming are counterintuitive.” Watch the accompanying video, directed by Owain E. After “pacifico,” their latest single, “helix,” is another striking glimpse into that world. Lush, layered and hypnotic, the track drifts between fragile balladry and moody, post-ambient soundscapes. It dives deep into the paradoxes of love, its power to heal and destroy in equal measure.

Speaking about the track, Night Tapes explain:

“’helix’ is about that moment when you’re on your way to meet someone new, someone important and you’re not sure if it is the best decision you’ve ever made or the worst. It is love that can completely transform our lives and take us from one place to another. subjective heavens , subjective hells. people do crazy things for love & all we can do is hope that they’re not attracted to the worst of what they been given. yet, sometimes the wrong person can take us to the right place.”

“Television” is Night Tapes first release of 2025 and comes just after they debuted their assisted memories EP, last June.
