If you are familiar with Buraka Som Sistema‘s music, then you might already know Afro-Portuguese musician PONGO. Now going solo, the artist totally captivated us some months ago with her song “Tambulaya“. Today, she has unveiled the five tracks of her debut EP and one of them, “Baia”, is a self-empowering banger. About the track, the artist stated:

[su_quote]’Baia’ is about how sometimes you have to face difficult things and have to go through to find something better after. I wanted to talk about my past and all the trouble i had to face in my life (personal and in music) and also about how all these things have made me stronger. Baia is an expression used to get people’s attention, i wanted to say something like ‘Hey, look where i am now.’ It’s a song full of energy (not something negative) and for all the strong women in the world.[/su_quote]

Hailing from Lisbon, PONGO has built a sonic bridge with her Angolan roots on her debut single “Tambulaya”. The track was inspired by the romantic encounter of her aunt and uncle during the Angolan Civil War. As they met in a club, the track takes on ready-for-the-floor vibes shaped in a strong synergy by PONGO‘s gimmicky vocals and burning, frantic electronic production. A catchy tune about the triumph of Love, with a major civil conflict that has lasted almost 30 years in the background.

About the track, she detailed:

[su_quote]This track talks about the unexpected and funny meeting between a man and a woman made for each other, but somehow they don’t know it yet. In a bar, slightly drunk, they will confide to each other, go all-in and drink/have fun on the dancefloor. “Tambulaya” means take, but also give, offer.[/su_quote]

For her upcoming debut EP, PONGO has collaborated with Raphaël d’Hervez, from Minitel Rose and Pegase, and Florent Livet who has worked for the likes of Bloc Party, Cassius and Phoenix.
