Losing touch is inevitable. But are you moving forward, or just running away? That question haunts Year of Romance, the self-produced debut project from Liza Dries.

The title of the record is misleading, though. 2023 was meant to be a romantic rebirth for the Germany-based, Dutch-born artist, after pandemic stillness. Instead, reality crept in. Dries dives headfirst into euphoria—hyperpop rushes, shoegaze swirls, breakbeat chaos—only to find the dream unraveling. “Babybloom” flutters like petals in a storm, “Happy Too” rides a manic Eurodance high, but the cracks start to show. By “Heartbreak,” the fantasy glitches, and the weight of impulsive living sets in.

Through layered melodies and wry self-awareness, Dries captures the fleeting rush of escapism and the inevitable crash. “These songs are frozen in time,” she reflects. “Now, I just want something real.”
