Between March and April 2023, in the creative pulse of Florence, VOV VOV! came to life. The project began with Giulio on drums, Pier Paolo on guitar, and Francesca handling vocals and keys. What started as freeform jam sessions and spontaneous melodies soon grew into a signature sound shaped by collaboration and experimentation. Since then, the band has expanded to include Giovanni on guitar and Zoe on bass, solidifying a lineup that explores the hypnotic repetition of krautrock with soft, dreamy shoegaze textures and approachable, melody-driven moments.
Their first EP, Sunbathing in a Magnetic Field, drops May 9 via Factory Flaws. According to the press release; their debut dives deep into genre-bending territory, full of swirling textures, driving beats, and unexpected turns. It feels like a long, immersive night drive through time and tone — from 60s psych organs to 90s indie sparkle, Eastern touches, and heartfelt highs and lows. In one word? Cool.
Before releasing the EP, the band shared their second single, “Nancy’s Track,” a song with an intoxicating groove and retro aesthetic that loosely recalls bands like Stereolab. But for the band, it’s the aura of Nancy Sinatra that comes through in the track—at least in its early version.
“In ‘Nancy’s Track’, the obsessive progression of organ chords takes center stage, creating a sonic backdrop that holds the other instruments together. It reminded us a bit of early Nancy Sinatra arrangements, which inspired the title. Like most of the tracks on the EP, this one is also divided into two alternating parts — we like simple, almost rough structures that stay close to the song’s raw, original version. The dynamics are tight and driven by the relentless rhythm of the drums, rhythm guitar, and bass. The lyrics tell, in first person, the story of a violent love: in the daylight, the woman recognizes the face of her partner, who tries to heal the previous night’s harm with a gentle touch.”
