Following up to their 2022 debut The Velvet Fair, East Sister‘s next chapter arrives this winter. Road My Bird, Waving Back is the band’s sophomore album, and it’ll be released on Red Brick Records, a label that put Pet Owner and Kate Birch on our radar. On this bold new record, the meticulous songwriting is still there, but many of the tracks were recorded live this time, giving the songs a more direct, physical edge. Beneath it all runs a constant groove, carrying warm analogue shimmer, dreamy precision, and lyrics touching on unwelcome crushes, loss, and autonomy.
The new single “Mixtape” perfectly showcases this evolution. “Mixtape” is a moody R&B crush that turns into a love letter to music itself, with a genre-shifting chorus and a sincere, playful wink,” as they explain it. The idea becomes even clearer in the chorus: “I want to fall in love with music, I don’t want to fall in love with people anymore,” they sing, as the track suddenly shifts gears, just like a real mixtape. Both heartfelt and slightly tongue-in-cheek, the song radiates a feeling of warmth and intimacy that also subtly recalls the tender, sunlit sensibility of Konradsen. It feels like a thank you to the joy of making music together. This is a playful love letter to songwriting itself, and an exciting preview of what’s to come from the Swiss band.
