The amazing Widowspeak have always had a way of quietly finding their way back into our lives, and honestly, we’ve missed them. Their 2022 album The Jacket still has a big effect on me, and “Everything Is Simple” and the title track still hit just the same every time they play. Anyway, Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas are now back with a new chapter, and it already feels like slipping into something familiar, but gently evolved.
The first taster of it comes with “If You Change”, a soft, dreamy return that leans into their signature warmth while gently unpacking the fear of change. “Don’t want mint condition / You’re gonna get dragged in the dirt,” Hamilton sings, capturing that tension between preservation and actually living something fully. As she explains, “I thought about the fear of change, and when things feel stuck in time because of a fear of ruining them… You always hear ‘mint condition’ as though it’s an asset, but it also means that thing hasn’t been used, lived with, loved.”
The new album, Roses, set for release on June 5, marks their seventh full-length and feels like a natural continuation of everything they’ve been building over the years. According to the press release, it leans into intimate moments and the quiet repetition of everyday life, where love becomes both a grounding force and something a little more complicated. Recorded on the Greek island of Hydra, the record carries that sense of distance and reflection.
