Avery Friedman’s latest single “Photo Booth” captures the energy and spontaneity of a night out with friends—one that left behind a trail of chaotic photo booth strips and a lasting sense of freedom. The track is taken from her upcoming album, New Thing, that she describes as “a conduit for emotions too frenetic to hold on your own.”
“Something about the novelty, containment, and ephemerality of a photo booth just invites a sort of flirtatious mischief,” Friedman explains. That night, for her, embodied the kind of “second adolescence” many queer people experience—those exhilarating, late-blooming moments of self-discovery and playfulness. The song fully took shape when she let go of traditional guitar-driven structures, embracing a more chaotic, pop-adjacent production that mirrors the night’s wild, unfiltered energy.
