Harmony Korine taps Burial for the soundtrack of his movie Baby Invasion

Burial scores Harmony Korine's surreal thriller Baby Invasion. The movie premiered on August 31, 2024, as part of the Venice Film Festival.

The indie community is buzzing: Acclaimed electronic producer Burial has composed the score for Harmony Korine‘s latest film, Baby Invasion. Premiered at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, the movie acts as a unique and unsettling multimedia experience.

Korine, known for his surreal and gritty depictions of American subcultures in films like Kids, Gummo, and of course Spring Breakers, has tapped Burial to accompany his latest vision. The British producer- real name William Bevan – has built a devoted following with his signature sound : atmospheric, sample-based productions that blend elements of post-dubstep, ambient, and UK garage.

According to the synopsis, Baby Invasion follows a group of mercenaries who use baby faces as avatars to conceal their identities while burglarizing the mansions of the rich and powerful. Shot in first-person shooter style, the film incorporates artificial intelligence and gaming engines to allow viewers to “remix” the storyline.

“We’ll create these almost like freakish cartoon filters that these invaders will have, that they’ll wear throughout, but then you could also possibly change them as you go,” Korine stated on IndieWire.

Burial‘s haunting idiosyncratic soundscapes add an extra layer of mystery and atmosphere to Korine‘s already surreal vision. However, during a press conference at the Venice International Film Festival, the American director mentioned that he has never met or spoken to the elusive artist associated with Hyperdub.

“I mean, Burial’s amazing,” Korine stated at the press conference. “He’s a legend. We got in touch with each other, but I never actually met Burial and I never actually spoke with Burial. So it was all done through Discord messages, and we’d kind of talk on PS5. And then the music was sent through PS5.”

This collaboration marks Burial‘s first full-length film score, though he has contributed music to cinema in the past. His last release was the split single “Phoneglow” / “Eyes Go Blank” with Kode9, released via Hyperdub back in June.
