Now, the self-made bedroom pop star, known for building entire worlds out of her experiences and turning personal reflections into vivid, shimmering songs, is ready to step into her new era, teasing her not-yet-announced debut album.
Her new single, “the beginning of the end,” feels like the perfect reintroduction. Written years ago during her college days, the track wrestles with questions of identity, faith, and freedom, as she explains: “I wrote this song seven years ago, when I was meeting people in college who didn’t grow up religious. I was meeting people of different sexualities for the first time and questioning the Christian rhetoric that being gay is an abhorrence… So this song is me trying to sort all my thoughts and feelings of once being restricted like, ‘Can’t I have some normalcy?’” Just as inventive as the track itself, the Quinn Wilson–directed video turns her inner thoughts into a spectacle, complete with a cheeky moment where she likens herself to a bodybuilder.
