Helsinki duo Pearly Drops (Sandra Tervonen and Juuso Malin) continue their otherworldly drift through dreamlike pop with a new chapter. Recently, the band released “Mermaid,” an uncanny collaboration with Australian outfit Cub Sport. Now, they dive deeper into the surreal with “Ratgirl,” the latest single from their newly announced third album, The Voices Are Coming Back, arriving August 29.
“Ratgirl” is a wild-eyed hallucination set in the shadowy corners of Silver Lake. Anchored by a pulsing electroclash beat, the track paints a strange, vivid image: “becoming a rat crawling through the walls of a luxury Airbnb” isn’t metaphor, it’s prophecy. “‘Ratgirl,’ like the previous single ‘Mermaid,’ drifts further down Talmadge Street, now submerged in a feverish and uncanny night,” the band explains. They describe it as “the weirdest scene in a David Lynch movie,” complete with fantasy-laced imagery and a haunted sense of Hollywood disillusionment. The accompanying video channels that same atmosphere: strobe-lit, disorienting, and eerily danceable.
This visceral new soundscape offers a striking preview of The Voices Are Coming Back, a record that sees Pearly Drops stepping outside their Finnish roots and into the unsettling dazzle of Los Angeles. Written and recorded during a transformative stretch in Southern California, the album draws from the city’s duality, where aspiration meets alienation. In their own words, “At its heart, this album is about the emotional unraveling that can happen when you chase a dream too hard… when fantasy and ambition start to bleed into your sense of identity.” Entirely self-produced, mixed, and visually styled by the pair, The Voices Are Coming Back already sounds like their own version of Mulholland Drive.
