Her new single, “California,” is the latest taster of this new era. Written during her first trip to Los Angeles, the track channels alienation, exhaustion, and the strange calm that can arrive in the middle of chaos. “Everything was unraveling. I was completely worn out, physically, emotionally, mentally,” Jouska recalls. Landing in LA brought her unexpected clarity: “The noise in my head quieted, and I met people who made me feel welcome without needing to perform. Some of them became close friends. It felt like I could start over, or at least exhale.” That fleeting relief cuts through the haze of the song, turning heavy emotions into something weightless, almost luminous. The proof that even in disconnection, moments of peace can be found.

If you’ve already heard “Pierced”. and “Flower Moon,” which is already featured in our Best Songs of 2025 playlist, you’ll know this record is shaping up to be something really special.

The newest single, “Season of Dread,” is a slow-burning, dusky song that sits heavy with emotion, capturing what it feels like to be weighed down by depression. As Jouska explains: “I wrote this song when everything felt heavy. It was like being stuck inside a winter that wouldn’t end, a season of dread, both emotionally and physically. I was moving through the days with a constant sense of unease, trying to hold it together but always on the edge of unraveling… This song came out of that place, a time when I felt completely out of sync with the world, like winter had stretched on endlessly and no one else seemed to notice.”

The album itself was written between 2022 and 2024 across New York, Los Angeles, and Oslo, at a time when, as she puts it, everything in her life felt uncertain. The songs reflect that sense of drifting, of not quite recognizing your own life, while moving between fragile, hazy soundscapes and moments of clarity.

The album’s latest single, “Pierced.”, explores a raw and vulnerable side of this next chapter. Following the haunting “Flower Moon,” “Pierced.” strips back the polish of Jouska’s earlier work, instead embracing darker, more fragile textures. “This one grew out of a shame tied to being seen at all,” Thorvik shares. “I’ve always struggled with visibility… This song captures that feeling.” Co-written with her partner Hans Olav Settem, the track blends shoegaze, noise rock, and trip-hop influences into a hypnotic, sensual arrangement. A few days ago, Jouska returned with “Flower Moon,” her first new track since that album. Written during a challenging time in New York, the song captures a moment of emotional dislocation. “Written in New York while I was trying to push through, but kept cancelling. I was anxious, distracted by things at home. Physically in one place, emotionally somewhere else, missing out on both,” she explains.

The result is a dreamlike, melancholic track that shimmers with soft-focus textures and understated melodies. “It felt like the right language for a song about emotional distance,” she adds. Produced with Hans Olav Settem, who also plays multiple instruments and provides backing vocals, the track also features contributions from Elias Tafjord (Sassy 009), Bård Kristian Kylland (GiddyGang), and Fredrik Svabø (Aurora). All together, they give layers to this beautifully foggy song, that is already featured in our Best Songs of 2025 playlist.
