Let’s not beat about the bush: 2020 was the worst year of my life and I think it might be the case for a lot of people around. As a music fan, not being able to attend any concerts, seeing some of my favourite venues and festivals endangered and reading that up and coming talents are struggling more than ever has been a big bummer. I’m not even mentioning all the emails starting with “hope you are well during these strange times”. Well, guess what? We aren’t!

Even if we have spent most of our time locked at home, streaming more music than ever, not sure the smallest DIY artists will see the difference when they’ll receive their royalty revenues. All of that to say that artists need you more than ever. As we always repeat it, streaming is good but it’s not enough. Buy your vinyls, cassettes and merch and so on on Bandcamp special days (so they get 100% of the amount) or via your local record store (yes, they’re also having a hard time), attend virtual shows or, even better, send direct tips to the artists.

Some good news, though: 2020 has been pretty amazing music-wise. While it’s not always easy to support everything or to keep up with all the weekly releases, our staff tried their best to introduce you to some promising up and coming talents and bring the best new music to your ears throughout the last 12 months. One year after her amazing debut album Miss Universe, Nilüfer Yanya has unveiled a brand new track, “Crash,” which also acts as the lead single of her new EP, Feeling Lucky?. These three new tracks centre around ideas of unpredictability and change, two themes that describe 2020 pretty well.

The turbulent single “Crash” was produced by Nick Hakim and comes with a video directed by her sister Molly Daniel. “Last year, doing a lot of touring I found myself becoming more and more anxious each time I boarded a plane, something which was new for me as I’ve never had a fear of flying,” Yanya explained about the concept of the clip. “With each flight we took it felt like the turbulence was getting worse and I was convinced my luck was due to run out. I didn’t write ‘Crash’ about being on an aeroplane but I really like it visually as an embodiment of the song.”

Like every December, we close a year of music with our traditional lists. After the Best Albums and Best EPs and Mixtapes, we’re happy to unveil the songs that made 2019 according to our team. Are these the best releases of the year ? Maybe yes, maybe no. But for sure, they represent what we have loved over the 12 months.

2019 is also the end of a decade and, even if the blog did not exist 10 years ago, we will try to share our favourite tracks of this era during the first quarter of 2020.

Finally, I’d like to mention that HighClouds would not be the same without its team of dedicated writers. People don’t always realize it but running a blog and contributing, even only from time to time, requires a lot of energy on top of your full-time job. So thank you to each of you for this.

Firstly, albums are not a thing of the past! Lof of people have claimed that this format was not relevant anymore in the streaming era, but the artists below have proven the contrary this year. Albums remain the best way to fully express an artistic direction and a vision.

Then again, it’s never easy to definitively rank albums so we guess that this list is only a photography of our tastes at this very moment. In one year, it could be totally different…

Finally, if you like any of these releases, and we’re sure you will, don’t forget to support the artists. Streaming is a good start, but it’s unfortunately not enough.

Nilüfer Yanya has just shared a video for “Baby Blu”, a soulful highlight taken from her excellent debut album Miss Universe. Directed by Molly Daniel, the visuals were shot in Japan when the artist and her sister visited their brother who is studying there. The final rendition could easily compete with Fast & Furious, except that the soundtrack is obviously better. Watch below.

22-year-old Londoner Nilüfer Yanya has finally announced the release of her debut album which will feature nothing less than 17 tracks (and we’ve heard only one of them). She has also shared a brand new track which sounds quite different from everything we’ve heard from her so far. If the tormented lyrics are in phase with some of her previous releases, “In Your Head” showcases buoyant rock arrangements with vigorous guitar riffs and shimmering organs. About the track, the artist detailed:

There’s the things I need disguised as things I think I only want, things I think I’m choosing out of choice not necessity… I think that’s what I wrote the song about, but what’s interesting to me, and what I think I was trying to get at, is the illusion of freedom.[/su_quote]

17 Heavyweight Champion of the Year

London’s 23-year-old artist Nilüfer Yanya has just unveiled “Heavyweight Champion Of The Year”, her second song of 2018. Like on her previous offering, the excellent “Thanks 4 Nothing“, she is singing about love with a good dose of bitterness and nonchalance but this time, she has learnt from her mistakes. She nourishes the tension with her riffs without falling in the trap of self-destruction. Instead, she takes distance, respects her own limits and makes decisions. About “Heavyweight Champion Of The Year”, she stated:

[su_quote]‘Heavyweight Champion…’ for me is about reaching my own metaphorical bar, reaching my own limits within myself, and kind of forbidding myself to take it further. It feels like quite a physical song, quite physically tired – and mentally, but knowing the desire is still there to continue. I imagine it sometimes in my head as drawing a line around me and the outside world – a form of self protection and preservation.[/su_quote]
