Molina‘s new single, “Parásito”, is taken from her sophomore EP, Vanilla Shell, to be released on January 20 via Tambourhinoceros.

If you don’t know Molina yet, it’s more than time to add this up and coming artist on your radar. Although she released her debut EP in early 2017, Rebecca Maria Molina (her real name) caught our attention last year with “Hey Kids“, which ended up in our Best Tracks of 2018. Since then, the 25-year old Copenhagen-based producer and musician has consistently amazed us with a series of singles in between lo-fi indie-pop and retro synth-pop, sparingly released via Danish label Tambourhinoceros. Following up on “Venus“, she has now returned with a track which pays homage to her half-Chilean background and that is, for the first time ever, sung in Spanish. “I feel Spanish amplifies my message. The drama in the language makes it easier and more natural for me to be extrovert and emotional,” she explained.

A song about desire, longing, and possession, “Parásito” draws a parallel between the loving feeling and a parasite, like when you are so stuck to your lover that you become and absorb a part of them. With such an obscure approach, she also reminds us of the cannibalistic seductress that is the preying mantis (and the artwork is pretty frightening as well). The track plays on this dichotomy between love and evil, as it alternates between bright guitars, ecstatic synths and dramatic refrains. Listen below.

Molina‘s “Venus” is out now on Tambourhinoceros.

Copenhagen-based producer and musician Rebecca Maria Molina, better known as Molina, caught our attention last year with “Mike” and her Late Verlane-assisted single “Hey kids” that ended up in our 100 Songs of 2018 list.

The artist is now sharing her first offering of 2019, “Venus”, which keeps on drawing the contours of her left-field, psych-soaked and retro-influenced synth-pop. Dark and glittering, her self-produced single features simultaneously cryptic and suggestive lyrics just like: “Venus is open, She’s yelling out loud! She’s not alone, eggs in his crowd, A bubble of isolation for two.” In mythology, the planet Venus is all about pleasure and represents femininity as well as love and beauty.

“Venus” also comes with a video that was directed by French visual artist and model Diana Guais. The two artists met via Instagram and decided to work together after Molina visited Diana in her childhood home in Normandy, where the video was shot with help from her friend Marina Jagoda. Watch below.

Molina‘s new song “Mike” is out on Tambourhinoceros.

The 25-year old Copenhagen-based producer and musician Rebecca Maria Molina, going simply by Molina, has just shared the follow up to her excellent song “Hey Kids“, which was also featuring Late Verlane. On her new synth-pop offering “Mike”, the artist depicts the portrait of an underdog, explores the concept of identity and wonders if this dude, Mike, exists in us all. And she does all of that with a left-field approach that is reminiscent of Kate Bush.

About the track and the visuals, Molina detailed:

[su_quote]The lyrics define “Mike” as an underdog — a person trapped in and weary of the neverending Treadmill of Life. To give the story another dimension I’ve created a video about a person liberating and standing up for himself. The opportunity to become the person you want to be is in my opinion the ultimate freedom. I hope that the tormented Mike and all the different emotions I associate with both song and video will make people relate personally with “Mike” and let them apply to it exactly the narrative that feels right for them.[/su_quote]
