If you’re a loyal reader of HighClouds, you undoubtedly know Tallisker. Today, the artist shares with us a remix of “Salanfe,” the lead single taken from her latest EP “Heliotrop.” This new version is signed by French producer 18h15, who smartly handles the sounds of the land of fire and ice: Iceland.

Tallisker and 18h15 met through Soundcloud last year. Their chat about electronic music and Icelandic aesthetics eventually turned into a collaboration. We were already fans of the original version of “Salanfe” and this new minimalistic flip emphasizes even more the cold beauty of the track.

18h15‘s remix of Tallisker‘s ‘Salanfe’ is exactly what we were expecting from Iceland: cracking sounds, crystalline vibes, strings and echoes.

When asked about her project, La Rochelle-based artist Cécile Nicolas details:

[su_quote]18h15 is about stopped clocks. About landscapes and broken windows. It’s about children’s nightmares and creaking floors.
18h15 is about never finding yourself, but looking for it. It’s an icelandic dream, a lonely cigarette or an abandonned doll. Your choice. 18h15 is every note, every sound, every imperfection your hear. No more, no less.[/su_quote]

Glasgow-based producer Tallisker released her new “Heliotrop EP” on Friday, following up the release of first single “Salanfe“, with the aim of making a statement. It’s a unique blending of orchestral, techno, and punk styles, that stretches current genre definitions. With individual successes and failures through the EP, it’s not a piece of work that will appeal to everyone.

The French woman aims to push boundaries by combining styles she loves. An accomplished cellist, Tallisker aims to integrate this with an adoration of techno, and says she is “happy if it’s hard to classify”. That it is, but the opener had me seriously doubting whether this stylistic mashup was meant to be.

“Schist” has a slow build-up that’s assisted by fluttering strings, only to introduce an 80’s style synth later on. Some really embrace this style, but personally, I think synths have developed for the better in the last 25 years and I was disappointed that Tallisker didn’t go with a more modern take.

Fortunately, things improve as we progress through the EP. “Cirrus” and “Astraea” both opt to abandon the poor synth choice and instead focus on the base and strings. This is where Tallister really shines, providing emphasis in all the right places. “Cirrus” also includes a spoken word portion, which is one trend I would love to see more of in experimental music.

The last two tracks didn’t leave too much of an impression on me. They seemingly have a fairly generic experimental feel to them, although I know this seems like an oxymoron. “Easter” sounds overly busy, with some strings and a strong baseline. There’s some trap features scattered here and there, nothing that feels ground-breaking.

The “Heliotrop EP” feels like a collection of scattered thoughts and ideas looking for validation. There are successes, as with “Cirrus”, and there are failures, as with “Easter”. Overall though, there isn’t a feeling of continuity. The songs aren’t even connected stylistically, much less via a common motif. While there are a couple tracks that may make it as popular singles, the EP itself is a bit disappointing – Tallisker should regroup and find a focus.

Re-discover Tallisker‘s special HIGHCLOUDS Mix and listen to the “Heliotrop EP” on Spotify.

It is not very often that we have the occasion to listen to music in another language than English. The world been dominated by Shakespeare‘s language, most artists make the choice to sing in it to capture a larger audience, taking the risk of signing/writing in a language that they eventually don’t feel comfortable with. SŪN JÙN made that choice in his previous work and finally lost a part of his true feelings by getting lost in translation. For the release of his debut EP on November 25 via YUMYUM, the rising pop artist decided to stay true to his emotions and sing on his native language: madarin.

“Wǒ De Ài” is the second extract of his EP and it means “My Love” which may sound cheesy like that, but what feeling is more universal than love? The track, accordingly to the Chinese artist, is about:

[su_quote]

Finding true love is comparable to trepanation: according to general belief, drilling a small hole into your skull might allow your brain to access more oxygen and ultimately achieve higher state of mind.

[su_spacer]
[su_spacer]

SŪN JÙN‘s “Wǒ De Ài” is like James Blake and FKA Twigs had sex in Beijing

Musically, SŪN JÙN is in between electronic vibes with pop touches. Going from a very hazy place to a more club-shaped sound, the artist deals with many references coming from many parts of the world. From R&B to dubstep and electronica, you can feel the globalization of sounds in the world. This being said, his debut EP reportedly had some troubles being distributed over iTunes/Apple Music due to the language. Over email, the record explained to us on how they had to lie to iTunes by putting that the track was in English to get distributed over the platform. We don’t know the real reasons for this matter, since big Chinese stars don’t have any troubles being distributed on it, but we’ll dig to find out.

You can follow SŪN JÙN over Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud and Instagram.

Glasgow-based female artist TALLISKER comes actually from France and her indietronica pop music is a smart mix of rave culture

Glasgow-based female artist TALLISKER comes actually from France and her indietronica pop music is a smart mix of rave culture and classical influences! Listen to “Salanfe“, the first single off her upcoming sophomore “Heliotrop EP“.

TALLISKER is a musician (she plays cello), but also a technician as she uses loops, distortion, reverb, and other effects in order to create harmonies between her instrument of choice and her crystal clear voice. The artist reminds us of Mhairi, Purity Ring, and of course Björk.

Her stage name comes from “A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland”, a travel narrative of Samuel Johnson that was released in 1775:

[su_quote]Talisker is the place beyond all that I have seen, from which the gay and the jovial seem utterly excluded; and where the hermit might expect to grow old in meditation, without possibility of disturbance or interruption. It is situated very near the sea, but upon a coast where no vessel lands but when it is driven by a tempest on the rocks. Towards the land are lofty hills streaming with waterfalls. The garden is sheltered by firs, or pines, which grow there so prosperously, that some, which the present inhabitant planted, are very high and thick.[/su_quote]

The track “Salanfe”, first single off her upcoming “Heliotrop EP”, due for November 11 via YUMYUM, is a cold symphony made of strings, vocal chops, and sounds similar to the interferences that are sometimes caused by some smartphones. The track is surprising in regards with the current French musical scene: it’s modern, fresh, and captivating.

[su_spacer]

About her upcoming “Heliotrop EP”, Tallisker wrote :
[su_quote]Heliotrop is a manifest. My view as an artist is to reassert the fact that there’s no such thing as pink music opposed to noble/classical music. Punk aesthetics are noble and noble music has become punk. That’s what I want to express when I mix cellos with heavy techno-friendly kicks or when an epic brass ensemble embraces a rough trap beat. You can enjoy both a victorian garden party and an underground hardcore music party. I’m interested in all the forms of ravings, I boil them, I distill them and I make my own stuff. And I’m happy if it’s hard to classify.[/su_quote]
