Purple Pilgrims are sisters Clementine and Valentine Nixon, a New Zealand duo whose music moves between dream pop, folk, noise and more atmospheric forms. Raised between Christchurch and Hong Kong, they first released music as Purple Pilgrims in 2011, before putting out Eternal Delight in 2016 and Perfumed Earth in 2019. In 2023, they temporarily switched to their birth names, Clementine Valentine, for The Coin That Broke The Fountain Floor, which they recorded in New York with Randall Dunn. Now, they are returning to Purple Pilgrims with a third album.
“Innocence Lost” is the first single from Given to the Night, out November 27 via Flying Nun and AD 93. The album came together during a period when Valentine and Clementine pulled away from the outside world, deleted social media and retreated into the trees of their native New Zealand, with only a small number of people joining them during the recording process. Rather than starting with a fixed concept, they let intuition lead the sessions. “We recorded songs as they appeared, which sometimes felt like catching light. Before we realised it we had a record,” they explain. Written during a period of personal transition, Given to the Night moves through blurred states of isolation, joy, insomnia, grief and fleeting clarity, with the sisters describing it as a way of “finding the light in the shadow.” “Innocence Lost” definitely belongs to that world, with floating guitars and vocal harmonies coming together in a dreamy haze. The single also arrives with a nocturnal, magnetic visualizer that you can watch below.
