Copenhagen-based singer, producer, and songwriter Bashir Billow has been crafting intimate soundscapes that blur the organic and electronic for years. As one half of the duo OWMI, he honed his craft through collaboration, but his artistry extends well beyond that. He’s also the co-founder of Fragment Radio, a QTIBIPOC-centered station dedicated to community and representation in sound. Now, Bashir is stepping into a new chapter under his own name and with his own label, Maanso.
That spirit comes alive in his debut solo track “Solitaire”, released a few days ago. At just 1 minute and 40 seconds, it’s a small yet sweeping piece, opening onto cinematic landscapes of stone, plateaus, and water. Written, produced, and recorded entirely by Bashir Billow, the song takes its title from the solitary card game, a fitting reflection of both the process and the theme. “It came to me during a late night solo recording session,” Bashir shares. “The chords started to spill out of another track I was working on, and I just followed the feeling. I laid down the vocals quickly, before my analytical brain could take over. The phrase ‘By myself’ came intuitively. It just felt true.” Minimalist, soulful, and textured with a bassline that adds a gritty edge, “Solitaire” turns a personal mantra into a powerful introduction. Watch the visuals made by Mathieu J.
